SC-05-05 meeting, Online, 2024-05

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-05 Working Group on Grounding and EMC Practices held online, 2024-05-20

The meeting was convened by Chair Anthony Kuzub.

In attendance were Anthony Kuzub, Richard Cabot, Jim Meyer, Kenneth Fause, Joel Brito, Fred Morgenstern, John Celli, RJ Kenney, David Andrews, Bruce Olson, Paul Treleaven, Bill Whitlock.

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The meeting agenda was accepted as written.

There were no minutes of the previous meeting held online, 2023-10-09.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open Projects:

AES-X152: AES standard on interconnections - Audio interconnection specifications
SCOPE: “To develop a standard for presenting signal levels and circuit impedances of audio system components and for the specification of these quantities in product data sheets” The goal / target / deliverable is a datasheet template that manufacturers could include in their manuals that explains the characteristics of the signals leaving devices and the characteristics of signals a device is capable of receiving. Having these parameters summarized in a consistent way will help users integrate equipment.

The discussion centered on the current document aimed at standardizing data sheet parameters for improved device connectivity. Feedback indicated that the document reads more like a report than a standard. Suggestions were made to pivot its focus towards interfacing rather than performance. Given its nature as a guideline, standardizing how equipment vendors will utilize future data sheets may prove challenging. It was proposed that an Analog interfacing and measurement group be established akin to the digital measurement group. The group continues to look for feedback about its current report and active participation in the development of this analog interconnection effort.

AES-X249: AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of 25-way D-type connectors in balanced circuits
attention was drawn to the upcoming reaffirmation of AES48 this year. The group is tasked with reviewing internal notes associated with X249 in the standards repository. Comments received will inform updates to AES48 before the next meeting in October.
