Report of the meeting of the SC-04-03 Working Group on loudspeaker modeling and measurement, held online, 2024-05-23.

The meeting was convened by chair Charlie Hughes.

Present were Charlie Hughes, Gerard Paul Jalandoni Elvina, Merlijn van Veen, Geoff Hill, Rich Cabot, James Hipperson, Bruce Olson, Steve Hutt, David Bialik, Peter Mapp, Joel Brito, David Murphy, John Busenitz, Daniele Ponteggia, David Prince

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, held in online, 2023-10-13, were approved as written.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open projects

AES2-R Review of AES2-2012: AES standard for acoustics - Methods of measuring and specifying the performance of loudspeakers for professional applications - Drive units
Scope: This Recommended Practice establishes a set of primary specifications to be followed by manufacturers in describing loudspeaker components used in professional audio and sound-reinforcement system design.

This was reaffirmed at our last meeting. It will be removed from the agenda until the next required reaffirmation date or until someone wishes to discuss it again.

AES56-R Review of AES56-2008 (r2019), AES standard on acoustics - Sound source
This is due for reaffirmation this year. DPo and GH mentioned that there might be some overlap with IEC 60268-21 and/or -22. GH volunteered to review these three documents and report back if there are any conflicts or overlap.

There was some discuss of a potential companion standard to address systems.

If there is no conflict with IEC 60268-21 or-22, CH will email the reflector to solicit any objections to reaffirmation. If no objections are received by the stated date, this will be reaffirmed.

AES73id-R AES73id-2019: AES information document for acoustics – Loudspeaker driver comparison chambers
This is due for reaffirmation this year. There was no objection at the meeting to reaffirm.

CH will email the reflector to solicit any objections to reaffirmation. If no objections are received by the stated date, this will be reaffirmed.

AES-X168 Characterization of loudspeaker systems;
Scope: This document defines a set of characteristics of loudspeaker systems for inclusion in manufacturers' specification documents, and identifies the relevant methods of measurement. It considers loudspeaker *systems* for professional applications. They may be combinations of active and passive sub-systems. It is intended for users and designers of loudspeaker system installations.

DM commented that CEDIA has made good progress on a similar standard during the last year.

Due to this and lack of interest to push X168 forward, we will postpone further work until the CEDIA standard or draft is available for review.

Liaisons:

The IEC is currently working on a revision for 60268-7. Currently at CDB stage.

New work item on a standard for measuring DML (Distributed Mode Loudspeakers). Currently at PWI stage, but tabled. Scheduled for completion by 2024. RC will attempt to get a copy of the draft standard for us to review.

New Projects

The group discussed a potential standard for smoothing of measurement data.

JH agreed to help complete the formal project proposal and scope with the assistance of RC. DPo expressed interest is assisting with this effort.

DPr commented that the X218 work effort of SC-04-08 would likely want to make us of such a smoothing standard. He requested that SC-04-08 me kept informed of progress.

CH will email the reflector with a call for assistance once the project proposal is submitted.

New Business

The next meeting will be held online in October 2024, scheduled in conjunction with the AES 157th Convention.
