SC-05-02 meeting, Online, 2022-05

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-02 Working Group on Audio Connectors, held online, 2022-05-04

The meeting was convened by SC-05-02 Chair Fred Morgenstern

In attendance were Fred Morgenstern, Richard Cabot, John Woodgate, Anthony Kuzub, Bruce Olson, Paul Treleaven, and Michael Poimboeuf

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The meeting agenda was accepted as written.

Minutes of previous meeting online, 2021-10-06 were approved.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open projects

AES72: Application of RJ45-type connectors and quad twisted-pair cable for audio interconnections
Anthony Kuzub reported on further industry adoption of AES72 by manufacturers using Category cable with four twisted pairs to transmit four channels of balanced audio.

AES59: Audio application of 25-way D-type connectors in balanced circuits
Anthony Kuzub discussed how development efforts under X249 are addressing issues of best practices for shielding and grounding in D-SUB connectors. This makes this work an extension of sction 4 of AES48. AES48 is the responsibility of SC-05-05.

AES62: AES standard for audio connectors - Modified XLR-3 Connector for Digital Audio
Bruce Olson mentioned that this standard is due for reaffirmation. Fred Morgenstern will ask the working group for affirmation or commentary in that regard.

Liaisons

Discussions with John Woodgate had previously suggested that perhaps control of the XLR standard should be removed from IEC SC 48 B (and its TC 100 group) to AES. However, the wide use of XLR connectors for non-audio applications (DMX lighting, DC power charging, industrial applications, and others) suggests that AES is an inappropriate group to maintain the XLR standard. So, AES shall not suggest any such changes in ownership of the specifications. While Neutrik has some objections to the standard as it currently is, Neutrik can take up those topics with SC 48 B directly if it wants to do so. TC 100 should be left out of the discussions.

New projects

Per Bruce Olson, Fred Morgenstern will contact Bill Whitlock to see if he would like AES to develop a standard for his patented balanced-signal RCA connector concept. If so, we would need a project request form for it, which is on the AES website. We would encourage Bill Whitlock to lead this project.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the AES 153rd Convention, to be held online in October 2022.
