AES Standards, registered values

Organisationally-Unique Identifier (OUI)

Organisationally-Unique Identifiers are registered with the IEEE Registration Authority for use Local and Metropolitan Area Network applications. They can be used to generate LAN MAC addresses and protocol identifiers. For more information, see ISO/IEC 8802, IEEE 802.3, and the IEEE Registration Authority Web site.

An OUI comprises a 3-octet value:

AES OUI 00-0B-5E

Unauthorised use of the AES OUI is prohibited.

AES OUI applications

It is important that the various uses of the AES OUI do not conflict. If you are drafting an AES document that requires an OUI, please contact the AES standards manager to obtain authorisation. Current applications include:

AES47 ATM signalling: BHLI IE
AES51 Ethernet packet addressing: multicast MAC address
AES67 AES profile: High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability

EtherType

Ethernet Type Field values ("EtherTypes") are registered with the IEEE Registration Authority and provide a context for interpretation of the data field of an Ethernet frame (protocol identification). For more information, see IEEE 802.3-1998 3.2.6 and the IEEE Registration Authority Web site.

An EtherType comprises a 2-octet value:

AES Ethertype 88DD16

Unauthorised use of the AES EtherType is prohibited.

In any Ethernet packet using the AES EtherType value, the first octet of the MAC client data will be an AES Protocol Identifier and the remainder of the MAC client data will conform to the standard indicated in the table below.
