Whether you're a new student at MTSU, an upper-division AP major or a graduate student, the AES will enhance your education through co-curricular experiences, special events and pro-audio networking.
All upcoming events will be posted to this website and also promoted classroom fliers and direct emails to Recording Industry students from the RIM department.
Check back regularly for updates.
Meanwhile, here’s an overview of the AES and student membership benefits:
The Audio Engineering Society is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research.
Currently, over 12,000 members are affiliated with more than 75 AES professional sections and more than 95 AES student sections around the world. Section activities may include guest speakers, technical tours, demonstrations, workshops and social functions. Through local AES section events, members experience valuable opportunities for professional networking and personal growth.
Again, AES promotes audio as a science and an art form and is a great way to network with professionals in the industry and fellow classmates. Our student chapter here at MTSU provides technical resources and access to new developments in pro audio that complement the Recording Industry curriculum and support your career development.

Working in the MTSU Studios as a new or pre-candidacy student:
Serving as an assistant engineer is a key learning opportunity with respect to technology, workflow and professional interpersonal skills. And you can do this before you even take a studio recording class or achieve candidacy! All you have to do is volunteer to sit in, observe and help out when an upper-division student has a session. Senior engineers who work with assistants benefit from the help, and they are usually happy to share their knowledge and experience.
Do you want to distinguish yourself as a good assistant engineer? Act accordingly!
Keep your eyes and ears open.
Keep your mouth closed (unless in emergencies!).
Think and plan ahead. Be reliable, be early and stay late.
Take notes and accept directions, instructions and feedback.
Update and maintain documents.
Set-up and manipulate stands and other equipment correctly.
Lay out, dress and coil cables properly.
Handle mics securely and carefully.
Learn and know your signal flow...!

San Francisco Opera Audio/Video Control Room
Location: Zoom Event (see link below)
Moderated by: Prof. Michael Fleming, Dept. of Recording Industry
Speaker(s): Douglas Mitchell, San Francisco Opera
Douglas Mitchell is the Master Audio/Video Engineer for the San Francisco Opera. Before joining the San Francisco Opera Sound Department in 2001, he worked on numerous films and corporate events as a member of I.A.T.S.E Local 16. Originally from Santa Rosa, Ca, Doug grew up in the industry as his father owned a Lighting and Sound company.
The San Francisco Opera recently completed a major upgrade to its technical systems, integrating its live, broadcast and post-production capabilities in a 96 kHz AoIP infrastructure at the 3,000-seat War Memorial Opera House. Mitchell will discuss the underlying technology, its normal operation and how the Opera maintained audience engagement during the pandemic shutdown through streaming and unique live events.
