The members of AES Finnish Section had an opportunity to see a Neumann AM31 lathe in action and hear from experts about this 80 year old recording tool. We gathered at Robi De Godzinsky's studio in Kirkkonummi, where one of these machines is still being used. Risto Syrjä, a retired recording engineer and caretaker of the lathe, explained how this old tool operates and how recording methods evolved from the times of this lathe at the Finnish national broadcasting company (YLE). At the end of the day we saw how a record is made and listened to the results.
