Meeting Topic: AUDIO FOR TELEVISION - Loudness and Audio Metadata Demystified
Moderator Name: Gary Osborne
Speaker Name: Jeff Nelson, Broadcast Channel Manager Dolby Laboratories Inc.
Meeting Location: Global Television Studio, Vancouver BC Canada
The USA recently passed the CALM act (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation) making it law in our southern neighbour to ensure that the loudness of advertisements is in keeping with general program content. It is a legal requirement for US broadcasters to measure loudness. Many other countries have similar legislation already in place or under study.
Understanding the implications and requirements for the audio producer and broadcaster can seem rather confusing at first. We are pleased Dolby's Jeff Nelson will be our experienced guide as we learn about such matters as Loudnes vs Level, Dialnorn, AC3 metadata, Set Top Boxes, ATSC A/85, EBU R128, and ITU-R BS. 1770/1. Afterward, attendees are likely to have a fresh appreciation of their HDTV set.
There was also a great tour of the Global Television Studio. They are also using robotic cameras and automated systems. Similar to the CBC.
