Summary

At noon on November 19, 2009, officers Vicky Rheault and Terence Deutsch of the Hartt School's Music Production and Technology program presented their first of two submissions to the AES Student Recording Competition of the 127th AES Convention. The presentation, supplemented by a Powerpoint filled with pictures from Studio B, described the methods used and issues faced in recording and producing the Hartford, CT-based blues-rock group Bronze Radio Return's "Money to Burn." Tracking practices covered included microphone selection and placement and tactics used to isolate instruments recorded simultaneously. Post-production tricks, like using delays for a more realistic panning effect, were also shared. Vicky and Terence reviewed implemented equalization, compression, and reverb techniques, but also focused on sonic decisions made long before the mixing process. Other important lessons reminded the assembly of the importance of careful collaboration with the artist and consideration of the artist's unique style in order to achieve a quality recording of the best possible studio performance.
