Summary

CRAS is excited to welcome Fiona Ham from MusicTeam, a music distribution site. We started the meeting with brief introductions and began the presentation. We started by discussing the history behind music distribution and how technology has evolved, which sparked the beginning of the recording industry, up to the way we function today. We discussed the importance of metadata when it comes to receiving proper compensation for rights holders. Some of the challenges for creators are a lack of education regarding copyright and catalog management, insufficient tools for managing these things, and time lost on administrative tasks instead of creating music. MusicTeam is a music management and distribution site that is meant to fix these problems. They help identify all rights holders and contributors, streamline music registrations, and help to educate on metadata management. You can manage multiple 'music assets', like musical works, sound recordings, and releases. They also work as a distribution site and can distribute both stereo and spatial audio tracks. There is also a sister program, called SkyTracks, which is for music creation and collaboration. MusicTeam has offered a deal to CRAS students, in that the 1st year of membership is free to CRAS students. After that, there are a variety of options at different price points depending on what you would be looking to distribute and register.
For the second part of our meeting, we started talking about the software itself. We discussed the different information needed to create a profile. MusicTeam has two ways that you can upload works: either one-by-one or in bulk. We went over the different information needed to submit works and how to do so as well. We wrapped up with discussing how to add artists and contributors to a work, and the ways to distribute works as well.
