Summary

Richard Whittaker, from his Dolby Atmos studio Starboard Audio, discussed his forensic approach in creating an immersive mix for heritage artists like The Who, Robin Trower, Thin Lizzy and others.

Specifically, he researches the original engineers and producers who created the recordings and studies their techniques and equipment used at that time. Thereafter, he translates their style into an immersive mix utilizing today's plugins including convoluted reverbs, the SSL suite of EQs and compressors and others.

Richard prefers a fairly static sound design when creating these immersive mixes. In other words, he refrains from a lot of sonic movement with the Music Panner, though he fully exploits the immersive space with the instruments at hand.

We also discussed the importance of personalizing the Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to improve the binaural experience and its sonic accuracy.

Finally, Marcela Rada, a UK Author, Educator and Engineer, presented an overview of her research on Dolby Atmos to create a core curriculum for educators to use in teaching this immersive technology.
