Summary

An AES meeting was held at CRAS- Gilbert campus on February 19, 2024. AES co-president, Vickie Cardenas, started the meeting off with individual introductions. The introduction question for this week was "Who is your audio role model"? Once everyone introduced themselves, AES office holders were formally introduced to the attendees. The meeting went over the purpose of AES and its membership benefits. Student membership pricing was also mentioned.
The meeting then involved mentioning upcoming events at CRAS. There will be a Women of Audio (WOA) meeting on February 20, 2024. This week's topic involves learning about freelancing from previous CRAS graduates located in the Phoenix area. CRAS will also be having a community night on March 16, 2024 at the Gilbert campus. Community night involves teachers and students performing live along with raffles. Then the co-president continued the meeting by introducing potential topics for the AES meeting next week. The options provided were networking techniques or sound field control. The topics were put to a vote and networking techniques won by a few votes.
The main topic for this week was Sony 360 VME (virtual mixing environment). Attendees watched a video that explained the general idea. CRAS teacher, Dave Kalberg, came to the meeting to talk about these concepts. He explained how the 360 WalkMix Creator worked with Sony 360 VME and how it compared to Dolby Atmos. Attendees also got to learn about the only VME studio locations: Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York. Dave Kalberg also took the time to show everyone his home studio setup, which is the only studio that is both Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 VME certified. Students got the opportunity to ask him questions about the technology and how it applies to different industries.
The meeting continued by explaining how subgroups work at CRAS and which ones are already in existence. CRAS currently has music creation/songwriting, sound design and jammers subgroups. The CRAS mentor program was also discussed. The co-president went over the sound design competition and the rules. A winner is chosen every 3 weeks based on majority vote. This meeting concluded with a plugin of the week, which is a soft clipper plugin called Initial Clipper.
