Summary

From 7th to 9th June 2018 the AES Hamburg Student Section organized the 4th klingt gut! Symposium on Sonic Art and Spatial Audio, bringing artists and researchers from around the world to Hamburg. The program comprised artistic and scientific presentations including lectures, concerts, screenings, performances and workshops, presented by 60 contributors from 18 countries, including Australia, Taiwan, Turkey, Canada, USA, UK, and Hong Kong. Our keynote speaker Gerriet Sharma from the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics opened a perspective on the interdependence of art and technology.

The program was complemented with a 3-day pre-conference masterclass "Composing with Sculptural Sound Phenomena in Virtual Auditory Environments" given by Gerriet Sharma and Frank Schultz, on spatial composition and aspects of sculpturality and instrumentality in 3D audio, including hands-on experience in our labs with WFS, VBAP, HOA in the loudspeaker dome, and IKO.

For the 3rd time the klingt gut Young Artist Award was presented in the categories Excellence in Art, Design and the Production of Sound, and Application of New Technologies in Sound Art and Sound Design.

Moreover, the attendants enjoyed a live acoustic/electronic concert of the Hamburg based "Krachkisten Orchestra" as a playful reminiscence of Luigi Russolo's 1910's Intonarumori, and a delightful dinner with a social get-together.

The AES Hamburg Section would like to thank all the generous sponsors of the event and of the Young Artist Award: d&b audiotechnik, audio technica, macom, Microtech Gefell, Pinguin Audio, PreSonus, Sennheiser, Steinberg and Yamaha Europe.
