Meeting Topic: Diversity, Inclusion and Discrimination in Audio Engineering - Presentation by Grace Brooks
Moderator Name: Melina Stephan
Speaker Name: Grace Brooks (PhD Candidate, McGill University, Montreal, Canada)
Meeting Location: HAW Hamburg, Arts and Media Campus // Soundlab
On November 25th 2019 Grace Brooks (McGill University, Montreal, Canada) held a presentation on the subject of "Diversity, Inclusion and Discrimination in Audio Engineering" organized by the AES Student Section Hamburg at the Soundlab - HAW Hamburg.
Within Grace Brooks' presentation she told us about the associated survey cooperating with the University of Lethridge and she gave us information on the most recent research regarding the subject. It was wonderful to meet Grace Brooks and get the chance to exchange information and ideas. It is still an uncomfortable topic to talk about, so this was an important step towards raising awareness on discrimination and the lack of diversity in different fields of audio engineering.
What made the presentation refreshing was that Grace Brooks didn't pass around the blame, she stated facts, what might be the cause of some facts and asked what could be done to change it. After the presentation the participants and Grace Brooks had a lively discussion and exchanged experiences on discrimination, diversity and inclusion in the audio field and everyday life.
