Meeting Topic: The History Of The Broadcast Cartridge Tape Machine.
Moderator Name: Jim Gilmore
Speaker Name: Andy Rector
Meeting Location: West End United Methodist Church, 4th Story Theater, 2200 West End Ave, Nashville, TN 37203
Andy Rector, whose life spans a long career with all the major manufacturers of broadcast audio cart tape machines -ATC (Automatic Tape Company), ITC (International Tape Company), and Audi-Cord Corporation, took the AES Nashville Section on a historical journey covering several decades of the invention and development of this technology. Considering the state of electronic technological development starting in the early 1950s, it was quite interesting to see how the visionaries were able to develop an advanced audio reproduction system targeted at radio and television broadcasters with a very limited pool of resources in which to create this technology. It was an exciting time in the industry with healthy competition and great desire to outperform the competitors and make the sale to the networks and station owners.
Andy had several working vintage cartridge tape recorders and players for those that wanted a hands on demonstration. A great event!
