Meeting Topic: A Career Chat with Kendall Demarest
Speaker Name: Kendall Demarest, Associate Music Editor at Walt Disney Animation Studios
Meeting Location: Georgina Joshi Recording Studio, Indiana University
The Audio Engineering Society chapter at Indiana University hosted Kendall Demarest on October 19, 2018 in the Georgina Joshi Recording Studio. Kendall is an associate music editor working for Walt Disney Animation Studios, and presented to a group of students about her career after graduating from the IU Jacob's School of Music Audio Program. She discussed her path leading to her current job, beginning with working for the IU African American Arts Institute, Larson Studios, Memnon Archiving Services, and DreamWorks Animation TV, before finally reaching Walt Disney Animation Studios where Kendall presently works. Part of Kendall's current job is placing temporary music into movies as a guide for the composers working on the final music. Recently at Disney, Kendall has had a hand in production on movies such as Wreck it Ralph 2, Frozen 2, and more; she even showed students clips from these movies.
Besides describing specific career aspects of the industry, Kendall also gave students a raw perspective to the hunt for work and finding one's place in the business. She also talked about how having an open mind is necessary for jobs as well, due to the fact that she had no intention of working on movies. Finally, she stressed how her path came from constant patience and persistence in looking for internships and jobs.
The AES chapter at IU would like to express its gratitude to Kendall Demarest for contributing her time and wisdom as she came to talk to our students about her experiences in the industry.
