Report on the 9th annual meeting of the Portuguese Section of the AES
The 9th annual meeting of the Portuguese section of the AES took place on the 20th of October at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. It comprised two main activities running in parallel: a scientific meeting and an audio technology contest aimed mainly at attracting student participation.
The main topic of the scientific meeting was Semantic Audio Processing. Research work on that area was presented by six speakers from academic institutions around the country. In addition to these, there was a presentation on state-of-the-art dynamic convolution equipment for musical applications developed by a Portuguese audio R&D company, a talk on the transition from the analogue and digital eras in the context of recording studios and a tutorial talk about microphones.
The annual contest on audio technology, already in its 3rd edition, received submissions from seven teams of students affiliated to several Portuguese academic institutions. The submissions, quite varied, including both hardware and software projects, were evaluated by an independent jury. Thanks to the sponsorship of three Portuguese audio companies, prizes — audio equipment worth just over 1000€ -- have been awarded to the best three projects.
