Meeting Topic: Inaugural Netherlands Student section meeting
Moderator Name: Björn Berkvens
Speaker Name: Rengert Eggink of the Royal Conservatory, The Hague; Thom Snippe of Fontys College of Engineering, Eindhoven
Meeting Location: Hogeschool voor Kunsten, Utrecht (HKU)
The Netherlands AES section kicked off 2016 on January 5, when the newlyformed Student Section had their first activity. Some 30 students from different institutions (electrical engineering from Fontys College Eindhoven, Students from the Den Haag Conservatory and College for the Arts in Utrecht (HKU)) got together at the HKU to attend a few presentations by fellow students and take a tour of HKU.
Rengert Eggink of the Royal Conservatory presented his track 'Methods of the Past' by his progressive
rock band Pink Bear. After a listening session, Rengert explained the choices made during production of this track and the artistic development of it.
The second presentation was by Thom Snippe of Fontys College and was concerned with harmonic distortion in amplifiers. After an introduction about harmonic distortion Thom discussed ways to measure it and presented his Fontys project, the design of a Total Harmonic Distortion analyzer.
After the presentations a short break was taken, followed by a very interesting tour of the HKU facilities. Of note was the visit to the anechoic room — hearing only yourself in such a room was a new experience
for many attendants!
The two presentations highlighted two different areas of interest within the audio world and all present agreed that this was a very good way to get to know each other's work. A very successful evening and certainly to be repeated!
