Boston AES Meeting
August 2013
On Tues. August 27, 2013, the Boston Section of the Audio Engineering Society held a meeting at the Granoff Music Center on the campus of Tufts University. Presentations were given by Paul Lehrman, Director of Music Engineering, Tom Bates, Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering as well as designer Matt Moore, AV systems specialist from Cavanugh Tocci.
The 55,000-square-foot facility houses acoustically sealed classrooms, Multimedia labs, Faculty Offices, practice rooms with instrument storage areas and the Lilly Music Library - a branch of the Tisch library. The centerpiece of the facility is Distler Performance Hall, a 300-seat recital hall, designed with attention to acoustical detail. Below the Distler Performance Hall is a two-story, acoustically separate rehearsal hall that can also be used for recitals and recordings.
Paul Lehrman started with introductions and an overview of the program at Tufts before going over the process of building the facility. Matt Moore talked about the specifics of the design and addressed the acoustical and isolation challenges of the project. He showed pictures and diagrams of the various stages of construction. Professor Tom Bates concluded the talk with comments about his students in the program and how the facility contributes to their education.
Following the talk, Paul Lehrman gave a tour of the complex. Refreshments were served after the tour in the atrium of the Hall where members we able to ask additional questions about the facility.
