Boston AES Meeting
March 2013
Wed. March 20, 2013 — The Boston Section of the Audio Engineering Society, in a joint meeting with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers New England Section (SMPTE) held a meeting entitled "Video Distribution Via Campus Network" at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT Engineer Chris Murphy and Senior Engineer Ron Hoffmann and Jonathan Ward of the Information Services & Technology Department at MIT provided a thorough technology overview and demonstrate various aspects of the new campus system.
Faced with an aging broadband coaxial CATV infrastructure, MIT is leveraging it's campus-wide IP network to carry video into a widely-distributed group of academic buildings, administrative and faculty offices as well as student residences. Now on a second generation of video distribution, a partnership with Comcast is helping MIT move forward with high quality VIDEO CONTENT DELIVERY to desktop and laptop computers, campus wide.
The discussion addressed the various stages involved in coming up with the correct solutions for a large campus with considerations built-in for future technological growth. Examples were given of the campus-based programming used for the classrooms and for college information dispersed to the students throughout the campus.
