One of the problems with consumer playback of surround
sound content is the equipment has limited
types of multichannel inputs. Generally, a Toslink or
an S/PDIF input is used to carry a compressed multi-channel
audio stream. This paper describes how a
consumer audio encoder that uses this digital channel
can be created to balance performance and cost
through proper algorithm design.
