An educator in audio since 1983 and mastering engineer since 1985 Jonathan travels extensively lecturing about new technology and workflows in audio. He presents workshops about restoration, audio repair in the US, Latin America, Japan and Europe.
This year Jonathan is co-chair of the 145th convention in NYC.
Jonathan has taught hundreds of students about the practice of audio mastering at the Berklee College campus in Boston, and via the online course he co-authored for Berkleemusic’s online school. He authored ‘Audio Mastering: Essential Practices’ release by Hal Leonard/Berklee Press.
He has trained numerous assistants and interns at M Works Studios in Cambridge, MA, several of whom have gone on to become successful mastering engineers in their own right including Adam Ayan at Gateway, Jett Galindo at The Mastering Lab, Michelle Mancini and others.
His credits range from the extremely well known (James Taylor, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Kiri Te Kanawa), to the more idiosyncratic and independent artists/labels (Aimee Mann, Tiny Tim, Rahsaan Roland Kirk). In 2005 Jonathan received a Grammy nomination for producing a long form concert video program with orchestra entitled Invention and Alchemy that aired on PBS nationally. He has several firsts/superlatives to his credit including mastering the first interactive CD Game (Play It By Ear, Rykodisc), the first recorded opera (Madame Butterfly recorded 1912 by the BBC). His skills extend forensic and restoration work.
