Thilo Schaller

Thilo Schaller is an internationally active recording producer, composer and a passionate audio educator. Born and raised in Germany, he moved to the Netherlands to study Classical Clarinet and Art of Sound at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Composition in Context and Sound Design at the Utrecht School of Arts. During his time in the Netherlands, Thilo also worked as Assistant Producer for Radio 4, the Dutch public classical radio station.
In 2010, Thilo was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Lethbridge in Canada where he helped developing a new study program in Digital Audio Arts. For this study program, he designed and delivered courses in various areas, such as music production and game audio. Since 2017 he has been working for SUNY Buffalo State, but he continues to live in Canada. Invitations for guest lectures and workshops have led Thilo to visit various renowned institutions, such as the Banff Centre and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 2016, he spent a semester as visiting professor at the Universidad de Tres de Febrero in Buenos Aires, to where he frequently returns for guest lectures and master classes.
As recording engineer/producer, Thilo has worked with numerous ensembles and orchestras, such as the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academic State Symphony Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia. Recent productions include the jazz album Canada, for which Frederik Köster received the Echo Jazz award (Germany) in the category best brass national, and the album Catch by the Sirocco Saxophone Quartet, which was nominated for the Quarterly Critics’ Choice of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
As composer and sound designer, Thilo writes music for the concert hall as well as for various media contexts. His first score for a Canadian feature film was nominated for the Alberta Film and Television Award in 2014.
