James Farber

James Farber began his professional engineering career in 1978 as an Assistant Engineer at New York’s Power Station Studios. One year later, Farber was promoted to Staff Engineer and spent the next couple of years recording Haitian “Compas” music. In the early 80’s, Farber got his start as a jazz engineer when saxophonist Michael Brecker asked him to engineer the first Steps Ahead album. Shortly afterwards, Farber recorded his first session for ECM Records and, to this day, Farber continues to engineer most of the New York dates for ECM. In the mid 80’s Farber began a three-year collaboration with producer Nile Rodgers, recording albums for Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Sister Sledge, and the Thompson Twins. It was during this period when Farber left Power Station to become a freelance engineer. After his work with Rodgers, Farber recorded two James Taylor’s albums, “Never Die Young” and “New Moon Shine”. From the late 80’s to the present, Farber has specialized in recording jazz, having worked with such artists as Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, John Scofield, Dave Holland, and Brad Mehldau.
