Kathy Peck, H.E.A.R.'s Co-Founder and Executive Director is a San Francisco Bay Area bass-player, composer and Monima Music publisher with her husband David Denny formerly of the Steve Miller Band. Kathy suffers from hearing loss and tinnitus exacerbated by exposure to loud volume in music while performing with her band The Contractions at Oakland Coliseum in 1984. This has given her the determination to create and manage the efforts of nonprofit H.E.A.R. to help others at risk especially young people to hearing loss and tinnitus for nearly 3 decades.

In 1989 Kathy received The National Council on Communicative Disorders Leadership Award at The Kennedy Center for her work in pioneering world-wide music hearing conservation education campaigns with the support of founding donor Pete Townshend of the Who. Later that year Peck was invited to participate on the National Institutes of Health strategic taskforce planning committee for the formation of The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). In 1996, Kathy successfully won an early landmark victory for The Americans with Disabilities Act in Peck vs United Artists Theaters resulting in the introduction of wheel chair access and listening-devices for people with hearing and accessibility-disabilities. In 2008 The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) “Believe in Music” was awarded to Kathy Peck of H.E.A.R. for her decades of service and leadership in hearing conservation for the Music Products Industry and she was inducted into the “200 Women in Music” (NAMM) oral history library.

Kathy also directs H.E.A.R. programs: • Listen Smart: Safely Handling the Power of Sound (HAMF), which includes film series and hearing health workshop for students and educators in partnership with The Hearing Aid Music Foundation (HAMF), The Les Paul Foundation, The Bill Graham Foundation, Shure and others, produced by Dan Beck and directed by Pamela French. • Save Your Ears for Music Campaign & Plugs in the Clubs Initiative™. In 2002, H.E.A.R. worked with San Francisco city and nightlife officials to pass the first ordinance in the nation to make fresh drinking water and earplugs available to music and entertainment venue patrons with efforts of expanding to other cities. • Hearnet Music Hearing Services in San Francisco & Hearnet Partner Directory referral ™ of audiologist, ENT and other hearing health professional since 1995 (HEARNET.COM). Since the 1990’s, Kathy and H.E.A.R. have been exhibitors at AES providing hearing help resources to AES chapter and student chapter members.
