Bob earned 10 Grammy Awards and 2 Latin Grammys,
He holds a Bachelor of Music in music education and a Master of Music degree in performance (trumpet) and music literature from the Eastman School of Music. He was awarded an Honorary Doctoral degree from the University of Southern Maine. While at Eastman he also worked as an announcer at a commercial classical radio station, worked in the school's recording department, and played Principal Trumpet with the Utica Symphony Orchestra.
He learned the art of record mastering at A&R Recording with Phil Ramone as his mentor. He moved to Sterling Sound shortly after its incorporation and became Vice-President. At Masterdisk he was VP and Chief Engineer. 23 years ago he opened his own business, Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, Maine. In 1997 the studio began its DVD Authoring operations and Gateway was the first mastering studio in the world to offer DVD services.
Bob has mastered countless Gold and Platinum plus 15 RIAA Diamond Award records.
In 1991 he was the first person to be honored with the Les Paul Award for "...consistently outstanding achievements in the professional audio industry". Bob has won an unprecedented 16 TEC Awards as Mastering Engineer and Gateway Mastering Studios has won the TEC Award 12 times as Mastering Facility. Bob holds an award from the Cinema Audio Society for Bruce Springsteen's Hammersmith Odeon concert and he has also been honored with an APRS Sound Fellowship.
Bob has spoken to many organizations including the AES, SPARS, The Recording Academy and the RIAA. He has lectured at recording schools including McGill University, the Banff Centre, Berklee College of Music, the University of Iowa, the State University of New York at Fredonia and Purchase, The University of Connecticut, Full Sail, the University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine and the New England School of Communications among others.
Often interviewed, special articles on Bob and Gateway Mastering have appeared in the New York Times, The Boston Globe, USA Today, the Portland Press Herald and many US newspapers via the Associated Press.
Bob was Co-chairman of the 6,000+ member Producers & Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy from 2004-2008 and continues to serve on the Steering Committee and the Advisory Council.
In 2015, Bob was the recipient of the AES Gold Medal, its highest honor. A Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society and a past Chairman of the NY Section, Bob is usually a panelist or Chair at nearly every Convention.
