TT1 - Teatr Wielki/National Opera & Yamaha AFC3

Abstract:
Designed by the Italian architect Antonio Corazzi, and re-built after world war II to be re-opened in 1965, the Teatr Wielki Polish National Opera has one of Europe’s largest stages (30m x 33m). Because of its size, it was challenged by a problematic communication between singers and the orchestra pit, and by insufficient loudness of the upstage singers for the audience. Also, owing to the small volume of the house, reverberation in certain conditions was lacking in the audience area depending on the repertoire, and early reflections from above were blocked from the audience seats below the balconies. The challenge
resulted in the installation of a Yamaha AFC3 Active Field Control system, commissioned in October 2014 with a production of André Tchaikovsky’s opera The Merchant of Venice. The system is one of the largest AFC3 systems in the world, including over 150 loudspeakers, 24 microphones, and 5 DSP processing subsystems, each dedicated to solve the different challenges. The tour will start with a short presentation of the system by the designers, installers, and users. After a performance by the house musicians to demonstrate the effect of the AFC3 system, a backstage tour will commence to see the many different speaker and microphone mounting solutions, DSP and amplifier racks, control system, and the distribution system.

Capacity limited to 100 persons.
