AES Warsaw 2015 Presenter or Author
Jacek Gawlowski
Primary Affiliation: JGMasterLab - Warsaw, Poland
Jacek is a Grammy winning sound engineer specialising in mixing and mastering and is based in Warsaw. His mastering credits include more than 2000 albums and nearly 200 records mixed and works with local top artists, such as Aga Zaryan, T.Love, Kayah, and others, but has also attracted work from around the world, mainly from jazz. He started as a guitar player and that brought him into contact with studios in the late 80s/early 90s – disappointed by the quality of experience he was nevertheless fascinated by the process. He studied at SAE London, graduated in 1994 and returned to Poland; while he admits that he lacked experience he says he had loads of energy and ideas and that attracted work.
He was a jobbing engineer recording, producing, mixing and mastering and says he’s always had a requirement to see a project completed and finished; something he admits may be due to ego.
In 2000 he felt ready for a change and established a mastering room. His plush JG Master Lab studio in the centre of Warsaw did extremely well and a new family home was built in 2008 in the northern suburb of Warsaw at the same time that he bought an SSL AWS. He started to think that the acoustically prepared room he’d had built in the new house would be a home to the desk for mixing duties but the madness of the continued commute and the splitting of his time caused him to amalgamate the mastering and the mixing capabilities at home. He has been working here for three years and his hit rate has continued to rise. Last year Jacek won a Grammy Award for mixing jazz record Randy Brecker plays Wlodek Pawlik’s Night in Calisia in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category.
