Secondary Affiliation: UC San Diego

Tim Mullen is a neuroscientist, entrepreneur, educator, and artist. Following a nomadic upbringing throughout South America, the Indian subcontinent, and Europe, he embarked on an academic path. He first obtained bachelor degrees from UC Berkeley in Computer Science and Cognitive Neuroscience, with highest honors, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Cognitive Neuroscience from UC San Diego at the Institute for Neural Computation. An interest in human-machine interfaces began with baccalaureate research at Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, and was later expanded at Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC), where he developed novel applications of wearable brain-computer interface technology for human-computer interaction.

The recipient of multiple research fellowships and awards, Dr. Mullen's current research includes developing novel computational learning approaches for non-invasive mobile brain imaging and cognitive and affective state inference. He has extensive publications, presentations, and research software contributions, and his work has been highlighted in numerous print and TV media including BBC World, Discovery Science, and Wired, and before the U.S. Congress. A firm believer in translating theoretical results to practical application, he is co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Syntrogi Inc and Director of Syntrogi Labs, which focuses on advanced neurotechnology R&D with research, medical, and consumer applications.

When not hacking the brain, Mullen moonlights as an artist and musician. His work in audiovisual media, using brain and body signals, has been demonstrated nationally and internationally. He is an Artistic Partner for San Diego classical arts organization Mainly Mozart, where he is founding director of the annual Mozart & the Mind series of concerts, presentations, and interactive exhibitions exploring the impact of music on our brains, health, and lives.
