Michael D. Capp

Primary Affiliation: Meridian Audio Ltd. - Huntingdon, UK

Michael D. Capp was born in Cambridgeshire, UK in 1976. He studied Maths and Physics at the University of East Anglia, Norwich before completing a PhD with Leicester University, whilst based at the University of Northampton under the supervision of Professor Phil Picton. The topic of research being Optophonic mappings – the conversion of video images into sound for use, amongst other things, as a potential mobility aid for the visually impaired. During his research Dr Capp investigated various image processing techniques for rapidly generating stereo depth maps, leading to improvements in the form of stereo cartooning.
For a further year he continued his research at the Open University in Milton Keynes as a research fellow investigating the application of Ambisonic sound in virtual environments.

On leaving the OU he took up a position as a Research Engineer at Meridian Audio Ltd in Huntingdon leading to the present day as Research Manager. Since starting at Meridian in 2001 he has been involved with numerous research projects, including working on MLP/Dolby TrueHD, as well as the algorithmic development of Meridian Room Correction and Cabin Correction. He also co-invented and developed the Meridian Enhanced Bass Alignment, Enhanced Boundary Control and Centre Elevation algorithms. He has been involved in co-supervising, as an industrial supervisor, Masters and PhD students from the University of York, the University of Southampton, and the Queen Mary University of London, in various areas of research, including Semantic audio analysis and Head-Related Transfer Functions.

More recent work on high resolution audio, an ever evolving field, has proved to be both an interesting and productive topic leading to new thoughts and developments regarding the importance of thorough filter design.

Dr Capp is a member of the AES, the IEEE, and the IOP.
