Julian David’s deeply rooted musicianship was kindled at age 9 with lessons in classical piano and drums. He soon made the transition to jazz piano and continues to play in various ensembles and bands. At age 13, he experienced his first recording sessions, and quickly moved to working on both sides of the glass.
After becoming infected with the “audio virus,” he enrolled in an audio and video engineering program at the University of Applied Sciences and the Institute for Music and Media (IMM) in Düsseldorf, Germany. This five-year curriculum involved both a traditional music education as well as technical engineering classes. Motivated by hands-on experience in the design of ribbon microphones gained during a 6-month internship with AEA Ribbon Mics in Pasadena, CA in 2008, his graduate thesis was an in-depth study of ribbon microphone output transformers. He graduated with honors with the German “Diplom” degree (equivalent to a Masters of Science degree) in 2009.
Julian has worked for major German radio and TV broadcast networks, location recording companies and studios, but his focus has been his career as an independent producer/engineer specializing in recording and mixing popular music. He is the recipient of three AES Student Delegate Assembly Recording Competition awards in both stereo and multichannel categories. Julian has been an active member of the AES for more than four years and he is former Chairman of the Dusseldorf AES Student Section and a former officer of the executive committee of the Los Angeles AES section.
In 2010, Julian returned to Los Angeles to work as lead product engineer for AEA Ribbon Mics. As such, he was responsible for the development of the R88 mk2 Stereo ribbon microphone, the KU4 Unidirectional microphone, and the RPQ500 preamp. He switched to manage AEA's marketing department in 2013 and has been responsible for the launch of the NUVO N22 microphone.
As a freelance engineer and producer he has worked at Los Angeles studios such as Billy Graziadei’s Firewater Studios, James Lugo’s SSL-equipped Hemispheres Recording, and The Treehouse Studio by composer Jeremy Soule. In his career, he has been honored to work with international artists such as Biohazard, Che'Nelle, Camaron Ochs, Yard of Blondes, Larry Goldings, Bud Shank, Bill Stewart, Frau KARO, and many more. He has also had the pleasure of engineering for pop/urban producer Jordan "Infinity" Suecof (Mary J. Blige, Flo Rida) and Grammy-winning engineer John Kurlander (Lord of the Rings, The Hurt Locker). 2014 is set to mark another milestone year as Julian returns to Germany to start his own studio in Cologne, Germany, after traveling Southeast Asia and the Pacific with his fiancée.
