Hans-Joachim Maempel is recording producer (Tonmeister Diploma 1996) and musicologist (PhD 2001). In addition to freelance work in the field of audio production he was visiting lecturer at TU Berlin (musicology communication sciences) and UdK Berlin (sound studies, tonmeister programme), and programme editor and member of the board of the German Tonmeister Association (VDT). As a postdoctoral research fellow (2006-2012) at TU Berlin's audio communication group Hans-Joachim Maempel led several third-party funded projects investigating perceptual aspects of music production and perception. Since 2012 he heads the department for acoustics and music technology at Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SIMPK). He is interested in how music perception and cognition are influenced by artistic, physical, technical and psychological factors such as music performance, room acoustics, sound design, reproduction systems, or listening situations.
