126th AES Convention: What you can expect to see

Munich, April 2009: With only few weeks to go to the show, we had the opportunity to talk with the people who have been planning this event for more than half a year.

126th Convention Committee

How would you summarize this show in one or two sentences?

Martin Wöhr, Chairman of the 126th AES Convention: “We organised a broad palette of topics from A, such as Audio for Games, to Z, like Zenith of Audio. This program not only gives insight into the hottest news in all genres of pro audio but also demonstrates that even in this time of economic challenge, the creative spirit of pro audio researchers doesn’t stand still.

We have selected the papers and posters according to their quality and in order to achieve a wide coverage of audio topics,” adds Günther Theile, one of the two papers Co-Chairmen of the 126th AES Convention. His colleague Geoff Martin continues: “I am delighted to note that almost 25% of the papers were written by students. This is a remarkable change from my first Convention in New York in 1991. It tells me that the efforts made by the Education area of the Society in recent years have paid off.

Is there a special highlight, an element in the program arousing outstanding interest?

Ulrike Schwarz who is chairing the Recording related parts of the 126th AES Convention answers: “One very rewarding event is the workshop in which we try to determine how much the cultural background of music mixing engineers is evident in their mixes. We invited five prominent individuals to mix the same piece of music and to discuss their ideas and the results.

Florian Camerer, chairing the Broadcasting related parts of the Program of the 126th AES Convention: “Oh, the convention is highlighting so many thrilling broadcast topics during the technical program of workshops and tutorials. For example, technologies for audio over IP, always high on the list of every convention in recent years, is the subject of an interesting workshop. Another current topic is audio for Blu-ray, again reflected in a workshop. Lipsync, loudness, 5.1 – all in all, I invite you to check out a really varied program rather than pointing out only one favorite!

Ben Kok, Chairman for the Workshop and Tutorial program: “With so many topics already mentioned, I want to add only a few: High profile mixing, grounding and interfacing, loudspeaker modelling and games audio, are covered in the workshops and tutorial program, too. We provide lots of valuable information, both for novice and experienced audio engineers.

A full technical program and a pure pro-audio exhibition – are there other reasons above and beyond to join the Convention?

Axel Dehler, Chairman of the Technical Tours: “The AES Convention in Munich is really worth a visit, not just, but also because of the broad Technical Tours program. My special recommendation: The BMW Group Munich invite us to have insights into their acoustics and vibration department. The various sounds of a car including psychoacoustical handling will be impressively presented.

Martin Wöhr again: “This Convention in Munich not only offers an informative program but also plenty of cultural events. Join one of the interesting technical tours, listen to the traditional organ concert in the famous Liebfrauendome, and taste the Bavarian beer! We wish you a successful and pleasant visit to Munich!

Dear AES Committee, we thank you for this interesting interview about the AES Convention in Munich!
