Piper Payne joined the staff of Michael Romanowski Mastering in 2011.
Piper received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performing Arts Technology–Media/Sonic Arts Concentration from the University of Michigan. While pursuing her degree in this technologically-rigorous program, she gained five years of experience as a Resident Student Engineer (RSE) in the U of M recording studios, specializing in classical music recording. Her position as RSE placed her at the hub of a major studio upgrade and gave her high-level experience in teamwork and project management. Piper continued her education at the University of Stavanger in Norway, receiving a Graduate Studies Certificate in Music Production and Recording. In Norway, Piper had the opportunity to learn analog-to-digital archiving with MemNor Sound Archival Service and apprenticed with Thor Legvold at Sonovo Mastering. In 2009, she worked as mixing engineer and mastering assistant with Bob Katz at Digital Domain in Orlando, Florida, and in 2010 accepted the post of Senior Audio Associate at The Banff Centre in Banff, Canada.
Piper is a Governor on the SF Board of the Recording Academy and Chairs the Producers and Engineers Wing. She also serves on the Education Committee. In addition she is an active member of the AES, the Women's Audio Mission, and Balanced Breakfast Music. While Piper’s focus is in mastering, she also works in software development for Digital Audio Workstations. Piper’s location recording skills are being challenged with Coast Recorders and the Bay Area recording scene, where she is a first-call for large-venue live concert recordings and many classical performances and she is also the Chief Content Creator for Giving Stage, an online concert venue benefitting nonprofits and causes.

Timothy Andrew Edwards is one of the most diverse and accomplished composers working in entertainment today. With nearly 75 film and television credits to his name, his genre spanning oeuvre is a testament not only to the multiplicity of his skill, but the openness of his approach, and his reliability in all forms of media. The Berklee College of Music alumnus’ background and sensibilities in composition, and experience as a Music Supervisor make him a singular, expert resource for the music needs of any project. Edwards has collaborated with NBC, CBS, ABC, MTV, Fox, E! Entertainment, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Bravo, Telepictures/Warner Bros, Universal, Lionsgate, National Lampoon, Spyglass Entertainment, Relativity Media, Dreamworks, Compass International Pictures and Magnolia Pictures. Most recently his music has appeared in such feature films as “Get Him to the Greek”, “You Can’t Kill The Bogeyman”; a Trancas Films International theatrical documentary about the iconic “Halloween” franchise, and “Columbus Circle” from director George Gallo. Additionally, he has scored over 100 trailers and promos for successful feature films and television shows. His dark score for the cult genre film “Necromentia” was described by Fangoria magazine as, "...genius...", “...brilliant, an almost unbearably oppressive meltdown of aural darkness....”.
?Edwards is a ‘go to composer’ in the world of television with compositions on shows such as “Keeping Up With the Kardashians", “The Bachelor”, "Ellen" and "TMZ". His themes for “Extra”, “Leeza”, and BBC’s “My Genius Idea” have become enduring signatures for all three programs. His songwriting contributions to “The Vampire Diaries”, “Smallville”, and “CW Now” solidify his status as a master of all formats. Edwards’ music is not relegated solely to film and television. His compositions in national advertising campaigns such as Secret Deodorant and the United States Marine Corps are a testament to his diversity. His continued involvement with the sCare Foundation, a non-profit which combats teenage homelessness and poverty, a cause close to his heart, has yielded emotional scores for numerous promotional and public service announcements.
He is a key panelist at SESAC events and worldwide AES Conventions and a frequent guest lecturer in classes for UCLA, CSUN, Musicians Institute, the Art Institute and the Los Angeles Film School (housed in the former “RCA Building” and recording studio used by Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones), where he speaks on the art and business of film and television composition. He will also be a panelist at this year’s Hot Springs International Horror Film Festival hosted by Tamara Glynn of “Halloween 5” fame (”...one of the most talented music composers in the industry.” – Tamara Glynn).
June 1st, 2015 will see the release of a book Edwards was interviewed for alongside a select group of composers including Stewart Copeland, Bruce Broughton and Charles Bernstein. The book, “Guerrilla Film Scoring”, will be published by Roman and Littlefield.
Edwards has just completed scoring the Trancas Films International Films Feature “Free Fall” starring Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”), D.B. Sweeney (“Taken 2”) and Sarah Butler (“I Spit On Your Grave”) to be released on October 28th, 2014. Coming in 2015, he will score “Down Angel” starring “Devil’s Reject’s” alum William Forsythe and Leslie Easterbrook. He is also set to score the horror feature “Blood Flower” starring Andrew Divoff (“Wishmaster” and “Indiana Jones”).

Michael Romanowski a Grammy nominated mastering engineer. Based in San Francisco, he is the owner and chief mastering engineer at Michael Romanowski Mastering, Owner of historic Coast Recorders and co-owner and founder of the analog tape label The Tape Project. Michael is now a Trustee of the The Recording Academy San Francisco Chapter (NARAS), Chair of the National Presidents Council, former president of the S.F. chapter and serves on the National Advisory Council to the Producers & Engineers Wing.
Since 1994, Michael has worked to support the tradition of the diverse San Francisco sound, and has become a national expert in the art and science of mastering (Mix Magazine, Electronic Musician, AES, NAMM, SXSW, Tape Op, Potluck Con, AES Mexico, AES Europe). Michael started his audio career as a musician and live sound engineer in Nashville, where he quickly progressed to recording and mixing pop, rock and alternative acts. In 1994, he relocated to the Bay Area to apprentice at Rocket Lab with Paul Stubblebine and Ken Lee, learning the art and craft of the mastering engineer. In 1999, he became the chief mastering engineer for Sausalito’s Plant Studios, in 2001 he reunited with Paul Stubblebine and built two new mastering rooms at the former location of Coast Records. In 2007, Michael acquired the business and continued to expand the facility.
He teaches at San Francisco State University and is a guest lecturer at other regional colleges. Jim Kaiser is an audio engineer and educator, and is on the faculty of the Audio Engineering Technology program at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
Until recently, he was Director of Technology at MasterMix, and responsible for surround production, audio restoration, and technical development. Selected credits include Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, Saturday Night Live, Kansas, Emmylou Harris, and Vintage Trouble.
Kaiser’s career features experience in location recording with artists including Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Gloria Estefan, and Michael Jackson, and technical design of recording and production facilities, including Sony-BMG, East Iris, MasterMix, and Clear Channel Entertainment/Live Nation.
Jim is Chair of the AES Technical Committee on Recording Technology and Practices, Co-Chair of the Convention Policy Committee, and Recording Track Co-Chair for the Los Angeles Convention Planning Committee. He has served on the AES Board of Governors as Vice President Central Region US/Canada, President (2010-2011), and currently as a Governor.
Kaiser is active on the Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing Deliverables Committee and the Nashville Engineer Relief Fund Board. He is a frequent contributor and organizer at international, regional, and local Audio Engineering Society events.

Award winning Mandy Parnell became interested in recorded music at the age of 5, listening to records on a portable Dansette player - the iPod of the time.
She studied music and music technology through her school & college years, trained and worked in recording studios until landing an internship, which led to her becoming a world renowned mastering engineer.
Mandy then decided to launch her own facility - Black Saloon Studios.
Mandy Parnell’s 24 years of experience have allowed her to discover and develop her philosophies in analogue and digital audio, while working with an amazing array of artists including Björk, Feist, The XX, Frightened Rabbit, Sigur Ros and Brian Eno.
Mandy’s unique style as a mastering engineer has afforded her respect from all areas of the industry. She has mastered countless records that have achieved gold and platinum status around the world.
As a firm believer in educating the next generation of producers and engineers, Mandy frequently lectures on mastering and the music industry at universities, colleges and organizations.
Recently Mandy has been working with Annie Lennox, mastered Aphex Twin's first release in 13 years 'Syro', Jungle, Philip Selway, Glass Animals, Jóhann Jóhannsson's soundtrack for the film "Prison", and Björk's Biophilia for cinematic and DVD release in 5.1. surround sound.Further Mandy has been featured on the BBC, Resolution magazine, Sound On Sound, Prosound news, NME and Audio Musica & Technologia.

Scott Levine is an engineer at Skywalker Sound in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is a researcher, music mixer and frequent presenter for the Audio Engineering Society. Specializing in immersive theatrical sound, Scott works with sound designers, re-recording mixers and industry professionals to develop tools and workflows to create new audience experiences.
Scott holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego and a Master’s degree from McGill University’s graduate program in Sound Recording where he was a member of the Virtual Acoustics Laboratory as well as the Small Environment Acoustics Researching & Testing Lab. He has previously chaired AES convention paper sessions, and has received a gold award in the AES student recording competition.

As of today registrations for the Student Recording Competition are closed. The Student Delegate Assembly thanks everyone who submitted their work. With the numerous entries we received are set to have a great competition in Los Angeles.
That all said, we're not done just yet. Students are still able to register for our Student Design Competition until September 26th (upload deadline: October 1st).
The Student Design Competition gives students the opportunity to show off their software and hardware design projects to a panel of judges consisting of renowned industry professionals during an exhibition, get feedback, and win awards and great prizes.

Ulrike Schwarz is a sound engineer of acoustic music in the radio, television and recording industries for internationally recognized productions. Her recordings have received multiple German and international awards and nominations and have received two Echo Klassik Awards, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenindustrie, Ars Acoustica, Diapason d’Or and many others. In August 2014, the Echo Klassik for Ensemble of the Year was awarded to her recording of Alfred Schnittke’s “Konzert für Chor“, performed by the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (BR)(BR Choir).
Ulrike received her Tonmeister degree from the Hochschule der Künste Berlin (University of Fine Arts Berlin) and studied under Jim Anderson in New York City and Akira Fukada in Tokyo. Currently she is in the process of defending her masters thesis for her Masters of Business Administration from Technische Universität München (Technical University Munich). Since 2001 she has been employed by BR in Munich, Germany, as a senior sound engineer for large orchestral and jazz productions.
From 1999 to 2000 she was Chair of the Student Delegate Assembly Europe and International Regions of the Audio Engineering Society and has been on the committee of the 106th, 111th, 112th, 116th, 118th, and 126th AES Conventions and also served as AES Governor from 2004-2006.

David Bowles, also known as "Golden Ears", is a classical and acoustic music recording engineer and producer. He has recorded all styles of music ranging from today's composers all the way back to the Medieval age. His recordings have won awards and acclamation for their vivid sound and committed performances.
Also known for high resolution recordings in surround+height, he has taught at the New York University Tonmeister programme for several years and participated in AES panels on immersive sound technology and application.
Other institutions Mr. Bowles has taught at include Indiana University, Peabody Conservatory and the Banff Centre. He is a member of the AES, SPARS and the NARAS Producers and Engineers Wing.
