Meet Darcy Proper, one of our honorable judges of Category 2: Traditional Studio Recording of the Student Recording Competition at AES138 in Warsaw.

Darcy began her career at Sony Music Studios in New York City in the Classical Department, later focusing her skills on mastering and broadening her musical scope to include in all genres from historical reissues to cutting-edge surround releases.  In 2005, she moved to Europe serving as Senior Mastering Engineer at Galaxy Studios in Belgium for several years before moving on to Wisseloord Studios in Holland.

Over the years, Darcy has been honored with 3 Grammy awards and 9 nominations and has won several other awards for her work.

She has had the pleasure of mastering historical reissue projects for such prestigious artists as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Johnny Cash.   She has also worked on stereo, 5.1 and Auro3D 9.1 front-line releases for many talented artists including Steely Dan, The Eagles, Ozark Henry, Donald Fagen, Porcupine Tree, Peter Maffay, Patricia Barber, Mando Diao, The Common Linnets, and Marcus Miller.

In the past we have had projects range from guitar multi-effects processors, channel strips, VST plugins, to even standalone iOS apps. As long as your design has a bit of innovation at heart, we have the top audio design professionals who will give you face-to-face feedback to help you in your career!

All you must do is follow this link and register for the competition, and upload a PDF of a project description by May 1st. Every entrant will get to present at the convention and show off their fantastic work!

Did we mention that there are prizes for the top entries? Not only that, audio companies from all around the world have representatives at AES conventions that frequently check out student events, and we have seen several students land jobs after graduation based on these interactions (so bring a resumé)!

Recording Producer and Balance Engineer with 20 American GRAMMY-nominations since 2006. Thirteen of these in categories "Best Engineered Album", "Best Surround Sound Album" and "Producer of the Year". Founder and CEO of 2L (www.2L.no). The deadline for the Student Design Competition is just around the corner and it's time for all student designers to step up and get involved.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students can still submit their design projects (e.g. loudspeaker designs, iPad apps, stomp boxes - any pieces of hardware or software) until April 24th May 1st.

All participants will present their work to Convention attendees and a panel of judges consisting of renowned industry professionals. 

Not only is the event a great opportunity to receive constructive feedback from industry leaders and precious exposure, it's also a superb occasion to network. Students have even been recruited by major companies or sold their designs as a direct result of taking part during previous competitions.

Further, there will be a large pool of prizes (such as MATLAB & MAX 7 licenses, books, audio software & plugins, electronic components, etc.) that will be awarded to the three or four winners in each category.

If you are an upcoming designer and this sounds vaguely exciting to you, we urge you to have a look at the event's official rules & policies, register for the Convention, and submit your documentation in time. We assure you that it will be worth your while.

Meet Florian Camerer, one of our honorable judges of Category 4: Audio for Visual Media of the Student Recording Competition at AES138 in Warsaw.

Florian Camerer joined the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) in 1990. In 1995 he became a staff-sound-engineer („Tonmeister“) mainly in the field of production sound and post-production. Already in 1993 Camerer started to get interested in Multichannel Audio. He mixed the first program of the ORF in Dolby Surround („Arctic Northeast“) and is now involved with all aspects of Multichannel Audio at ORF. Since autumn 2008 Camerer chairs the EBU group PLOUD, introducing loudness normalisation as a successor to peak levelling. He is lecturing on an international basis especially in dramaturgical aspects of surround sound productions, microphones for surround sound, multichannel audio for HD and loudness.
