Merging Technologies is the world’s foremost manufacturer of high-resolution digital audio recording systems. The company was founded in 1990 in Chexbres, Switzerland by Claude Cellier; an electronics graduate of the Institute of Technology in Lausanne Prior to this, Claude worked for the famous Swiss audio maker Nagra Kudelski for 10 years. Meet Bob Moses, one of our honorable judges of the Student Design Competition at AES139 in New York.
Bob Moses is Executive Director of the AES, with three decades of experience as an audio product designer. He is most known for his role in inventing audio over Firewire, which fueled the “project studio revolution”. Bob has had his fingers in the design of products for dozens of pro audio companies over the years, and thinks he might still have one more box in him before he fades out.

We, the Student Delegate Assembly are extremely excited to announce that U-He are once again sponsoring this year's Student Recording Competition.
What is the prize? U-He are providing four winning students each with a licence for the synthesiser or plugin of their choice from U-He's catalogue.
Berlin-based audio software company u-he was founded in 2001 by Urs Heckmann. Originally a one-man show, the company recently evolved into a tightly-knit team of employees, active associates and 3rd-party contractors – with ambitious plans.
Especially well known for the Zebra2 and Diva software synthesizers, u-he has developed several other successful products over the last decade, and regularly contributes freeware to popular magazines (available as download or on cover discs).
Despite their underlying complexity, u-he synths and effects are widely acclaimed for their ease of use. This is often attributed to Urs Heckmann's background as industrial designer. Heckmann sees the seemingly unconventional decision to start an audio software company as a direct result of his equal love for industrial design and for synthesizers.
Most recently, u-he has been exploring concepts for analogue synthesizers, and the first results can be heard in the software synths ACE / Bazille (audio-rate modulation paths) as well as Diva, Presswerk and Satin (accurate simulation of electronic circuitry). Hive is u-he's first foray into the world of low CPU dance-oriented synths.

Meet Kris Gorski, one of our honorable judges of the Student Recording Competition at AES139 in New York.
Born in Poznan/Poland he begun his music education with piano at the age of 7, and continued through his years in college in England. He then moved to Paris where, after obtaining his diploma in Audio Engineering from SAE Paris, he engaged in 12 years of intensive studio work for independent artists, labels and TV stations. A few years into his sound engineering career he begun writing music for films which proved to be an ongoing passion and an important part of his work. He has since also become a song writer.
He has engineered over 100 albums and worked on dozens of film and advertisement projects both as a composer and sound engineer. He loves working with the new generation of music talents in Poland, producing albums and film tracks. He maintains a working relationship with musicians in France, England and Denmark. Open mind and unorthodox approach are the key ingredients of his work.
In 2006 he co-founded APS - a company with focus on manufacturing high quality active studio monitors. A successful venture which continues to this day and represents Polish technological thought all over the world and collaborates with number of Universities. The company’s R&D model is based on very strong relationship with the recording community, striving to make the very best tools for the sound engineers, producers and musicians.
Presently Kris lives in Poland, helping in the running of APS and his own production company AudioPlanet. For a number of years now he has been involved in a working partnership with Piotr “Miki” Mikolajczak - a renowned producer and former Sony Artistic Director, with whom he has co-written and co-produced a number of projects.
All throughout his career Kris gave a lot of importance to education. He has been giving workshops to young people for the last 17 years and has recently started working with students form the Science University of Gdansk where he is also involved through his company’s AudioPlanet collaboration with the University. He has also worked as a consultant on a number of projects on studio construction.

Meet Jonathan Wyner, one of our honorable judges of the Student Recording Competition at AES139 in New York.
Jonathan began his career as a Mastering Engineer in 1985 and has more than 5000 album credits. His credits range from the extremely well known (James Taylor, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Josh Groban, Kiri Te Kanawa, Nirvana, Miles Davis), to the more idiosyncratic and independent artists and labels (Aimee Mann, Tiny Tim, Rahsaan Roland Kirk). In 2005 Jonathan received a Grammy nomination for producing a program for Deborah Henson-Conant with orchestra entitled Invention and Alchemy that also aired on PBS nationally. He has several firsts/superlatives to his credit including mastering the first interactive CD Game (Play It By Ear, Rykodisc), the first recorded opera (Madame Butterfly recorded 1912 by the BBC). His skills extend forensic and restoration work.

Meet Richard King, one of our honorable judges of the Student Recording Competition at AES139 in New York.
Richard King is an Associate Professor in the Music Research Department at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University in Montreal. He is also a Grammy award winning recording engineer across a wide range of categories, and this past year he was nominated for Best Engineered Album in both the Classical and Non-Classical categories. Richard is also part-time faculty at the Banff Centre in the sound and media department, and a member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music, Media, and Technology.
A frequent presenter and panelist at the Audio Engineering Society, he is active as a guest lecturer at various sound recording programs world-wide. His research interests include small environment acoustics, and multichannel recording and reproduction.
