Meet The Judges! Student Design Competition: Dave Hill

Meet Dave Hill, one of our honorable judges of the Student Design Competition at AES139 in New York.

 

Forward Thinking Audio Gear from Crane Song and Dave Hill Designs. Crane Song Ltd. is about designing and building the highest quality audio hardware and software possible.  The products include A/D and D/A converters, Equalizers, Preamps, Compressors, Monitor Controllers, and plug-ins for PT.  The designs range from discrete class A electronics to dsp.     The Philosophy is to make musically sounding gear and plug-ins that solve problems in the recording environment.  The products very flexible, by changing a control the sound of the device can go from very clean to very colored while remaining musical.  In 2011 Dave Hill Designs was lunched to provide products that are digitally controlled analog, DHD follows the same philosophy of building the highest quality musical signal processing devices possible. Meet The Judges! Student Recording Competition - Category 1: Jim Anderson

 Jim Anderson is an internationally recognized recording engineer and producer of acoustic music for the recording, radio, television, and film industries. He is the recipient of numerous awards and nominations for recordings and broadcasts. Jim’s recording “Modern Cool” won the Grammy for Best Surround Album at the 55th Grammy Awards and his recording “Sixteen Sunsets” was nominated for Best Surround Album at the 56th Grammy Awards.

A graduate of the Duquesne University School of Music in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jim has studied audio engineering at the Eastman School of Music and Sender Freies Berlin. During the 1970s, he was employed by National Public Radio and, since 1980, Jim has had a career as an independent audio engineer and producer. He has been a frequent lecturer and speaker for the AES and master-class guest faculty member at leading international institutes. He is a professor of recorded music with the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and was the department’s Chair from 2004 – 2008.

He has served as Vice President for Eastern Sections of the AES, chaired the New York City Section of the AES and was Chair of the 119th,123rd, 131st, and 135th AES Conventions. In 2006, he was made a Fellow of the AES and was also the President of the Audio Engineering Society, 2008-2009.

Meet The Judges! Student Recording Competition - Category 3: Bill Crabtree

Meet Bill Crabtree, one of our honorable judges of the Student Recording Competition at AES139 in New York.

Bill Crabtree is a Professor of Recording Industry and the Director of the Masters of Fine Arts program in Recording Arts and Technologies at Middle Tennessee State University. He works as freelance musician, recording engineer, and technical writer. He has engineered a wide scope of studio productions in Boston and Nashville. As a technical writer he recently completed the latest Operator’s Manual for the API Legacy Plus console. He teaches courses in multi-track recording and studio production in MTSU’s B.S. in Recording Industry and M.F.A in Recording Arts and Technologies.

Bill earned his B.S in Recording Industry from Middle Tennessee State University and his M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from Cambridge College in Cambridge Massachusetts. Prior to joining MTSU’s Recording Industry faculty, Bill served as an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music, Artist in Residence at Emerson College, Assistant Chairman of Audio & Media Technology at New England Institute of Art, and Chairman of Recording Arts at Massachusetts Communications College.
