AES 140 Meet the Judges! Barry Marshall

Experienced, dynamic and creative as a performer, musician, songwriter and record producer, Barry Marshall is all of these and more as an educator. He started the critically acclaimed student record label, Naked Ear Records, at New England Institute of Art, where he is an Associate Professor and helped develop the audio and music business program and curriculum. Since 1999 he has also been teaching at Emerson College, where his classes include Recording Industry as a Business, and History of Media Arts. 

 

In addition, he has toured and recorded all over the world as both a musical director for The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame’s LaVern Baker, and as a record producer  for Baker, Peter Wolf, and Ben E. King. He was a songwriting partner to the late Doc Pomus, and he’s shared the stage on gigs with everyone from Paul Shaffer to Bonnie Raitt to B.B. King.

 

Most recently Barry has produced an album for Boston based artist Peter Montgomery titled Baby Sunshine.  Barry has also been working with Nashville based band the Zigos on their upcoming release.  In additon he produced three albums for Cape Verdean artist Dany Silva and is the Musical Director and Audio Producer of the One Planet Education Network, currently developing content for museums and video games. He also has become a respected lecturer/presenter at Audio Engineering  Society conferences and conventions, including at AES Budapest in 2012, AES NYC in 2013, and  AES London in 2010 and 2011. He was awarded his Doctorate in 2013 from Argosy University.

AES 140 Meet the Judges! Andres Mayo

Andrés Mayo pioneered the art of Audio Mastering since the early 90´s, working at diverse facilities throughout the world, such as Unique Recording (NYC), dB Post (London), TonStudio Bauer (Ludwigsburg, Germany) and Estudios Panda (Buenos Aires). In 1994, Mayo co-founded Mr. Master, first professional mastering facility based in Argentina, which later became Andres Mayo Mastering & Audio Post (www.andresmayo.com). He is responsible for the final touch in over 2,000 musical titles from many of the best known artists in the world, including Seal, Steve Hunter, Pedro Aznar, La Vida Bohéme, and producers such as Dave Reitzas (USA), Andrés Levin (Venezuela), Guillaume Debros (France) and Daniel Orejuela (Germany). Andrés won 2 Latin Grammy Awards as a producer for his 7-DVD collection “Buenos Aires, Days and Nights of Tango”, in the categories of Best Tango Production and Best Recording Package. He also received 6 Carlos Gardel Awards as a mastering engineer and over 20 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations for albums he mastered throughout the years. Mayo was elected President of the Audio Engineering Society in October 2014, becoming the first Latin American to hold that position since the foundation of the AES in 1948. He currently serves the Society as Past-President and advisor to the Executive Committee. He is also the first non-American engineer to hold a position at the Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council, a key working group of NARAS (the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences). AES 140 Meet the Judges! Malgorzata Albinska-Frank

Malgorzata Albinska is a Frank polish sound engineer and music producer. Was born in Warsaw, Poland. She studied Music Production and Sound Engineering at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. After graduating 1989 she started her career as a freelance sound engineer and music producer working first in Warsaw, then in Switzerland and Germany. Since 1993 she also teaches recording techniques at the Basel Music Academy/Switzerland. 

Following her fascination with the classical music, acoustic and acoustical sound of the instruments, she specialised her work on recording and producing music from the Middle Ages through Classic till Contemporary Music. She works with international known musicians for different music companies, music festivals and radio stations. In addition to the competence, her clients appreciate mostly subtle sense of hearing, sensibility in order of sound and artistic performance. Her productions distinguish high sound quality as well as musicality.

Sixteen of these in categories Best Engineered Album, Best Surround Sound Album and Producer of the Year. Founder and CEO of the record label 2L. Associate Professor at Westerdals University - Oslo School of Arts, Communication and Technology.

AES 140 Meet the Judges! Ian Kagey

Ian Kagey is an experienced sound technician, engineer, and musician with skills in live and studio recording, sound design, editing and mixing. He is currently one of the faculty members of the Music Production, Technology, and Innovation Masters Program offered by Berklee College of Music, as well as Chief Engineer of the Berklee Valencia Campus.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, the New York state native started his professional career at New York City’s MSR Studios (formerly Right Track Recording) as technician and an assistant engineer. At MSR, Ian worked on many diverse sessions ranging from Broadway shows such as ‘Book of Mormon’, ‘Catch Me if You Can’, ‘Anything Goes’ and ‘The Addams Family’; to film mixes such as ‘Extremely Loud Incredibly Close’, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, and ‘Tower Heist’; as well as popular music recordings with renown artists such as Madonna and The Roots.

Ian has also worked extensively as a freelance engineer, editing and recording for composers including Marc Shaiman, Jason Robert Brown and Joe Iconis, as well as mixing film scores for Lucio Godoy and Laura Karpman.

In the field of sound design, Ian has experience with both professional opera and theatre companies, and worked as the Technical Manager of the National Opera Center in New York helping to open the facility in September of 2012.

AES 140 Meet the Judges! Scott Levine

Scott Levine is an engineer at Skywalker Sound in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is a researcher, music mixer and frequent presenter for the Audio Engineering Society. Specializing in immersive theatrical sound, Scott works with sound designers, re-recording mixers and industry professionals to develop tools and workflows to create new audience experiences.

Scott holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego and a Master’s degree from McGill University’s graduate program in Sound Recording where he was a member of the Virtual Acoustics Laboratory as well as the Small Environment Acoustics Researching & Testing Lab. He has previously chaired AES convention paper sessions, and has received a gold award in the AES student recording competition.
