130th Recording Competition Judge: Ray Gillon

Ray Gillon will be judging entries in the category "Sound for Visual Media". Come listen to this expert offer valuable feedback at the Recording Competition finals in London!

"Born 1957. Interest in sound first tickled by wild noises heard being a Radio Ham in my teens and being able to recognise a 747 jet from the sound of Pratt and Whitney engines. A girlfriend gave me a guitar and life went downhill thereafter. Studied (and graduated) Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Kingston. Started and recording mixing bands at Kingston. Mixed and recorded loads of live gigs. Was patronised by Alan Tarney, Songwriter, musician and producer. Left R&D EMI Electronics post grad job to go to Riverside Studios, Acton, Full Time.

Found that the Esso Blue paraffin heater was better than the EMT plate for some reverbs. Rediffusion for 4 years designing A/V systems around the world. Now 27 years of enjoying Film sound. I record, mix, edit, produce and even direct movies, also around the world.

I have won 1 Spanish Academy Award and have 3 further nominations for best sound on a feature film. I was awarded an honour for services to the Polish film industry in 2009. I won a Turkish academy award (Golden Orange) for best sound on a feature film.

I am responsible for Warner Bros international language versioning of their blockbusters and am just about to enter the final straight with the last Harry Potter film."
