The AES Atlanta Section held it's 11th Annual Student Workshop on September 19th at Turner Studios. The workshop consisted of four rotating classes. Recording was instructed by Matt Still (Elton John, Outkast, Santana). Matt demonstrated some basic microphone placement techniques and then proceeded to record a live trio of volunteer musicians as a demonstration. Mixing was instructed by Michael Cardillo (Creative Waves) who would take the session from the recording class to mix on the spot. Critical Listening was instructed by Jim Anderson (Patricia Barber, Jane Ira Bloom, Joe Henderson) who explained the fundamentals of frequency bands and would play several listening examples for practice followed by group discussion. The final class was an introduction to the digital audio workstation Cubase. It was instructed by Paul Lipscomb (Denyce Graves, Lil Wayne, Rich Boy) of Steinberg. Paul demonstrated some fundamental uses of the DAW, and then had the students independently create a project afterwards. After all of the classes were completed, the students participated in a career panel Q&A session. The workshop was sponsored by Turner Studios, CTG Atlanta, Tech Rep Marketing, Waves Audio, Found + Lost, Rickwood Music LLC, Steinberg, and Atlanta Pro Audio.
