I came to New York when all recording was analog using tape for music and mag for film and learned the technical and social arts of recording. All the equipment has changed, much of the gear is clearly better, today's technology brings capabilities beyond imagination, and audio is part of the explosion in emerging new media. Television sound is mixed from a continent away, concerts are live on your television/computer/mobile device, and movie sound adds up/down to left/right and front/back.
It's encouraging to see new equipment designs from passionate designers and to see our industry borrow from IT and telecom for better solutions to common problems. Computers and the Internet have certainly changed how but not why we want to create, record, amplify, manipulate, and transmit sound and our joy in sharing the result.
