Dr. Karlheinz Brandenburg has been a driving force behind some of today’s most innovative digital audio
technology, notably the mp3 and MPEG audio standards. He is acclaimed for pioneering work in digital audio coding.

He got a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Erlangen University in 1989. After a postdoc position at AT&T Bell Laboratories he continued to work at Erlangen University. In 1993 he became department head of the Audio & Multimedia Department at Fraunhofer-IIS in Erlangen.

His honors include the AES Silver Medal, the “IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronic Award” and more. Dr. Brandenburg has chaired two AES conferences, given many papers at AES conventions and holds about 100 patents.

Currently he holds the positions of full professor at the Institute for Media Technology at Ilmenau University of Technology and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau, Germany.
