AES Dublin Convention Keynote Speaker Stefania Serafin to address the sonic Interactions of sound, music and technology in "Inclusive Sonic Interactions" address.

The Audio Engineering Society, celebrating over 70 years of audio science and innovation, is gearing up to host the 146th International Audio Engineering Society Convention, March 20 – 23 at the Convention Centre in Dublin, Ireland. As part of the Opening Ceremonies, Stefania Serafin, professor in sonic interaction design at Aalborg University Copenhagen, will examine the intersection of audio and technology in the address “Inclusive Sonic Interaction.” This presentation, part of the AES Dublin Special Events series, is open to all attendees and will set the stage for four full days of immersion in audio technology and its application.
Based on her extensive knowledge and research, Serafin will offer insight into the technologies and techniques being used to advance audio and its capabilities in today’s connected world:
“Sonic interaction design is a fertile field of investigation at the intersection of sound and music computing and interaction design. At Aalborg University I have been designing, together with several collaborators, sonic interactions for different applications, ranging from physics-based simulations of musical instruments and everyday objects, new interfaces for musical expression, cultural heritage, walking and rehabilitation, learning and training, as well as virtual and augmented reality. In this talk I will present an overview of these activities, with a focus on those who contribute to engage a wider and younger audience in sound, music and technology.”
In addition to her design work at Aalborg University, where she leads the multisensory experience lab, Serafin received a PhD from CCRMA, Stanford University in 2004 and is the president of the Sound and Music Computing Association.

President of the Audio Engineering Society, Nadja Wallaszkovits
The AES announces the ascension of Nadja Wallaszkovits to the office of President, taking on the role as of January 1, 2019. “Having worked with Nadja for many years as part of the AES team, we look forward to having her serve in the role of president, as the Society continues our mission to promote science and education in the field of audio engineering,” states AES Past-President David Scheirman. “Nadja’s knowledge of audio engineering technologies and experience within the AES will be a valuable asset in the coming year.
Wallaszkovits’s 25-plus-year involvement with the Audio Engineering Society has included serving as vice chair of the Austrian section and on the Technical Committee on Archiving Restoration and Digital Libraries, as well as working in Standards on the SC-07 Subcommittee on Metadata for Audio. She served as Convention Co-Chair and received AES Board of Governors Awards for her work on both the 142nd (Berlin) and 144th (Milan) AES International Conventions. For the past year, Wallaszkovits has served on the Executive Committee of the AES Board of Governors’ Executive Committee as President-Elect.
Wallaszkovits studied ethnomusicology at the University of Vienna before joining the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2005. She currently holds the position of Chief Audio Engineer at the Academy’s Phonogrammarchiv. She recently took over the management of a Public Private Partnership collaboration between the Phonogrammarchiv and NOA Gmbh that is dedicated to the restoration of acetate media. Wallaszkovits also holds the position of vice chair of the Technical Committee of the International Association of Sound Archives (IASA) and is a member of the Training and Education Committee of IASA. Additional AES committee experience includes the Board of Governors and its Executive Committee, Awards, Conference Policy, Convention Policy, Education, Finance, Laws & Resolutions, Membership, Nominations, Regions & Sections, Diversity & Inclusion, Associate Technical Editors and the organizing committee for the AES 145th International Convention in New York City.
“I became associated with the AES for the first time in the early days of my audio education when a professor recommended that I join the Society and invited me to attend the local section’s meetings,” says Wallaszkovits. “I was immediately excited – it was my first chance to meet the well-respected audio professionals of our country, to listen to their presentations, discuss current topics and become involved in the community. This powerful impression and experience profoundly impacted my professional life and has deeply linked me with AES and our community.” She concludes, “AES offers a unique, collegial community.I would like to thank our membership, numerous business partners, supporters, volunteers, and the AES staff for their continuous engagement in the Society. We look forward to a highly-successful year in 2019!”

AES Executive Director Colleen Harper
I feel honored to be joining AES as Executive Director, as well as incredibly motivated and excited to make a difference. The organization’s rich history provides an excellent foundation, and AES continues to stand strong today because of the passion and dedication of its members, volunteers, and staff. It is such a special community.
I had the great fortune of attending the fall convention in New York last October and felt an amazing energy that is truly unique to the organization. I met a number of people who told me about the importance of AES to their career… to their students… to the broader audio industry. Whether we are pursuing opportunities or tackling the challenges ahead, I assure you that we will always keep our most important asset in mind: YOU, our members.

Making its debut at this year’s AES@NAMM Pro Sound Symposium: Live & Studio is a series of sessions offering focused insights into practical miking techniques and technology. The new “Microphone Academy: Studio & Live” events, taking place Friday and Saturday of AES@NAMM, are among the many educational and hands-on opportunities open to all registered attendees of AES@NAMM, being held concurrently with The NAMM Show in the NAMM U campus on the Anaheim Hilton’s 4th floor, January 24 – 27 in Anaheim, CA.
On Friday, January 25, Microphone Academy sessions will focus on issues dedicated to studio applications with topics including Ribbon, Virtual and VR Microphones, as well as a special presentation on Large Diaphragm Condensers. Such practical knowledge is given in the first session of the day, “Condenser Mics and Factors That Affect Their Sound” presented by Hans Riekehof of Schoeps. The investigation of microphone characteristics that impact mic sonic signature and use continues with the session “Why Ribbon Microphones Reproduce Sound So Naturally,” led by host John Jennings of Royer Labs. An overview of microphone modeling technology and the various available systems and how they compare will be presented in Friday afternoon’s “Is There a Modeling Microphone In Your Future?” session with presenters Julian David, Erik Papp and Chris Townsend of Townsend Labs. The day concludes with an examination of “Dynamic and Static Binaural Recording, Mixing and Reproduction for Immersive Audio” with Gio Jacuzzi, focusing on the Neumann KU100, AMBEO Smart Headset (developed in cooperation with Apogee) and the AMBEO VR Mic, with a drawing for AMBEO Smart Headset at session's end.
Saturday, January 26’s sessions feature a variety of events involving Live Sound miking, including touring, live broadcast events and instrument-specific applications. Presentations will begin with leading live sound engineer Dave Rat in “Double Miking the World,” in which he will detail his work with top touring acts. Further application-specific mic technique will be the topic of “Miking Piano, Choir and Orchestra” with presenter Paul Andrews. Mark Frink, AES@NAMM Director of Program & Content, and Manager, Live Sound Content, will host two sessions – “Choosing the Right Vocal Mic,” featuring special guest experts from the live sound industry, and a final presentation, “Festival Input List and Stage Plot: Tech Rider Update,” in which Frink will expound on the importance of communicating your audio needs and expectations by creating a combined one-page input list and stage plot document which is the vital core of every audio technical contract rider.

AES Executive Director Colleen Harper
The Audio Engineering Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Colleen Harper as the Society’s Executive Director, effective January 21, 2019. “Our Executive Committee's challenge has been to find an individual with deep and broad organizational management, direct prior experience within professional membership organizations, and a unique skill set that combines operational expertise, marketing skills and team leadership capabilities,” revealed David Scheirman, the Society's President for the 2017-2018 term of office. “The Society's Executive Director Search Team has selected Colleen Harper from a field of exceptionally well-qualified candidates. Our entire AES Board of Governors looks forward to working closely with Colleen from day one in her new position at the Society's world headquarters office in New York City.” As Executive Director of the Society, Harper will report to the Executive Committee of the AES Board of Governors.
Most recently, as the Chief Operating Officer and Interim Chief Executive Officer for the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), Harper notably led the implementation of strategic goals to drive both short- and long-term growth and sustainability for the $6M organization, led organizational budgeting, managed ASPEN’s signature annual conference and led the expansion and enhancement of membership service and growth, exemplifying her talent and capabilities.
On January 1, 2019, Scheirman handed over the role of AES President to Nadja Wallaszkovits, Chief Audio Engineer for the Austrian Academy of Science's Phongrammarchiv in Vienna. “With the addition of Colleen’s proven record of leadership, we expect 2019 to be a banner year for the Society,” President Wallaszkovits stated. “Education is AES’s primary mission, training and cultivating the next generation of audio professionals and members. That’s accomplished in part through our vibrant event schedule – international conventions and conferences, regional events and local section meetings – which will continue to be a focus for the Society, including further development of our presence on the west coast of the U.S. Our membership is our greatest asset, and we look forward to further improvements in our service and benefit to both our individual and sustaining membership, alongside our focus on advancing our strong relationships with our industry partners. The AES is essential to the vitality of the professional audio industry, promoting extension of innovation and learning and standards. Colleen has a crucial role to play in our vision of the Society’s future, directing our staff and working with the myriad volunteers so essential to the Society’s mission, including the current and incoming members of AES’s Board of Governors and our leadership team.” Wallaszkovits further noted that the AES leadership team is solidified for the coming year with the addition of the Society’s new Treasurer Richard Wollrich and President-Elect Agnieszka Roginska.
“I am thrilled to join the AES team,” shares Harper, “and look forward to leading the organization as we continue our work of uniting and educating audio engineers, creative artists, scientists, and students from all over the world. Further realizing the AES search team’s goals for the Society’s next Executive Director, Harper’s extensive experience also includes serving the National Investor Relations Institute as Director, Professional Development; as Association Manager for the global meeting and association management firm Meeting Expectations; as Assistant Manager of Membership for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers; and as the Director of Membership and Organizational Relations for the Geoprofessional Business Association.
Harper has a BA from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Public Administration, Nonprofit Management degree from Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, where she was a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society. She has been a Certified Association Executive (CAE) since 2012 and was an Association Forum of Chicagoland’s Forty Under 40 Award recipient in 2014.

Taking place all four days of AES@NAMM, the Line Array Loudspeaker System Academy offers an expert-guided introduction and interactive experience with line array technologies design, setup and implementation. Each of the presenting manufacturers will hold two-to-three-hour classroom intro-and-overview sessions of the featured line array technology, teaching the line array's design, theory and supporting software components in a small-group classroom format. A companion practical application session instructs mechanical assembly and electrical hook-up details for erecting an array from a portable line array tower, culminating in system proof and coverage confirmation with the use of pink noise and an evaluation track of music. Sessions for each of the four days feature the Bose ShowMatch, JBL VTX A8 and VUE Audiotechnik al-Class Line Array technologies.
Live Mixing Console Academy
The AES@NAMM Live Mixing Console Academy, also running all four days, will offer attendees a chance to interface with leading live digital console manufacturers and participate in hands-on operation of digital mixers and their latest software offerings and updates. Sessions hosted by Allen and Heath and presented by industry veteran Michael Bangs (Katy Perry, Eric Clapton, Aerosmith) include practical training such as the dLive House of Worship Masterclass, dLive Festival Mixing Masterclass and dLive Monitor Mixing Masterclass. Additional sessions from Allen & Heath offer dLive Certification and a console training session presented in Spanish.

The days continue withclassroom instruction on recent wireless hardware innovations from leading brands. In-Ear Monitoring Academy
Taking place on Friday, January 25, the AES@NAMM In-Ear Monitoring Academy will be hosted by touring monitor mixer Mark Frink. The day begins with an IEM Fundamentals session with Frink and Dr. Michael Santucci (Sensaphonics) covering IEM best practices and examining the physiology of hearing and how in-ear monitors should be deployed to aid hearing conservation. This is followed by the session “Wireless IEMs and Spectrum Update” with Karl Winkler discussing analog vs. digital wireless monitor systems and the implications of changes in the available RF spectrum. The afternoon begins with “Choosing the Right IEM For Stage and Studio,” where Mike Dias (Ultimate Ears Pro) and Frink will educate attendees on IEM topologies including dynamic drivers vs. armature drivers, hybrid and multiple driver implementation, and custom fit vs. universal earpieces. The afternoon continues with the practical workshop “In-Ear Monitoring Advantages and Personal Monitor Mixing” with Mathias Von Hydekampf.
