At the upcoming AES New York 2019 convention, taking place October 16 – 19 at the Jacob Javits Center, the Acoustics and Psychoacoustics Track will feature nine events over the convention’s four days that explore the way we hear and the ways the spaces we listen in affect perception. Acoustics and Psychoacoustics Track chair Alex Case has curated the program, which is dedicated to the prospect that, as Case notes, “all who listen hear better when they know more about the science behind acoustics and psychoacoustics.” 

Highlights are set to include the following:

On Thursday, October 17, the session “Circles of Confusion” will feature panelists Sean Olive (Harman International) and Susan Rogers (Berklee College of Music) alongside moderator Thomas Lund (Genelec). The session brief asserts that circles of confusion in pro audio are replacing technical limitations with cognitive limitations. Further, without proper anchoring of spectral balance and level, drifting over time is foreseeable in self-referenced systems, thereby putting legacy recordings at the risk of sounding dated for no good reason. The panel will discuss monitoring requirements that stand the test of time, recent studies on active sensing, variation in perception between listeners and “slow listening.” Also discussed will be a possible revision of ITU-R BS.1116.

Expanding on the topics discussed in “Circles of Confusion,” “Circles of Excellence” will take place the next day, on Friday, October 18. This panel addresses the topics from a more practical perspective. Thomas Lund again serves as moderator, alongside panelists Florian Camerer, ORF (Austrian TV and European Broadcasting Union), Bob Katz (Digital Domain Mastering) and George Massenburg (Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology [CIRMMT]). The experts on the panel will try to separate the facts from the myths surrounding recording, monitoring and reproduction, and explain which of the elements they have found most essential in their work to make it stand the test of time.

Also on Friday, “Listening Tests - Understanding the Basic Concepts” will be presented by Jan Berg (Luleå University of Technology - Piteå, Sweden). Listening tests are important tools for audio professionals as they assist our understanding of audio quality. There are numerous examples of tests, either formally recommended and widely used or specially devised for a single occasion. In order to understand listening tests and related methods, and also to potentially design and fully benefit from their results, some basic knowledge is required. This tutorial aims to address audio professionals without prior knowledge of listening test design and evaluation with the fundamentals of what to ask for, how to do it, whom to engage as listeners, what sort of results that may be expected, and additional related issues.

The Audio Engineering Society is an invaluable resource to all who want to learn about the achievements of audio innovators whose contributions we honor, and build-upon, to this day. This year’s Historical Track events, taking place at the AES New York 2019 Convention, October 16 – 19 at the Javits Center, spotlight a wide range of audio pioneers and technologies, and offer insights into our rich audio history while paying tribute to our mentors. 

“The Historical Committee has been hard at work providing a diverse and thought-provoking program for this convention,” states AES New York 2019 Historical Track chair Gary Gottlieb. “Ranging from classic figures in our history like Rudy Van Gelder, Tom Dowd, and Spike Jones, to diverse sessions exploring contributions of women in audio, hip-hop engineers, and a look into the evolution of audio equipment, including microphones, compressors, and pitch effects – we offer something for anyone interested in audio!”

One highlight of this year’s Historical Track is a session titled “Rudy Van Gelder: A Legacy in Audio Engineering,” which will take an in-depth look at his unique approach to recording and production for laying to tape hundreds of classic jazz recordings spanning a period of over five decades. Always on the cutting edge of technology, AES Gold Medal recipient Van Gelder used a plethora of state-of-the-art tools to create “the Van Gelder Sound,” a distinct and easily recognizable sonic fingerprint that helped define the sound of jazz on record during the classic analog era of the 1950s and 1960s. Sharing that story will be Michael Cuscuna, producer and founder of Mosaic Records, and Don Sickler, publisher and co-founder of Second Floor Music (Sickler, along with his wife Maureen, currently run the Englewood Cliffs studio), and Richard Capeless of Deep Groove Mono.

The Session “Spike Jones: Preposterous Precision” will undoubtedly offer an entertaining look at musical innovator whose influential style and wit took his roles of bandleader, musician, and comedian took his production to new heights. Professor Mike Wisland will present Spike’s life including his childhood and early professional career, leading to the formation of his massively successful parody band, Spike Jones and his City Slickers, in addition to a video presentation by Emily Taggart on the bandboy of Spike’s, Skip Craig, followed by Q&A with Spike’s daughter – and highly-successful recording engineer - Leslie Ann Jones.

Thursday evening will offer a special Limiter Engagement Screening for AES New York attendees of Tom Dowd and the Language of Music which will take place at the Dolby Theater. This independently produced feature-length documentary gives a detailed look the long-time engineer and producer for Atlantic Records, who was responsible for some of the most important R&B, rock, and jazz records ever made. The film will be followed by a talk with Tom’s daughter, Dana Dowd, who will share memories and answer questions from the audience. Networked Audio events kick-off on the Convention opening day with a premier panel “Solution-Based Approaches for Networked Audio in Live Production” moderated by Dan Ferrisi (Sound & Communications) with panelists Tim Boot (Global Brand Strategist, Meyer Sound), Genio Kronaue,( L-Acoustics), Morten Lave (Adamson Systems Engineering), Patrice Lavoie, (Solotech) and Jamie Pollock (Kore Audio Design). The panel will cover topics including scalability, IT expertise and planning, along with insights from the panelists’ years of industry experience.

The AES70 networked control standard will be examined in “An Introductory Tutorial to AES70” later that day. Presenters Jeff Berryman and Ethan Wetzell from Bosch Communications, and representing the OCA Alliance, will team up with Simon Jones from Focusrite to introduce participants to AES70, the AES standard on Open Control Architecture (OCA). This session is partnered with the Product Development session “How to Add AES70 Control to Your Products” on Saturday, October 19.

Also on Saturday, Patrick Killianey (Audinate) will present “What Audio Engineers Need to Know about Media Networks,” a reprise of a popular session in the Networked Audio track. Killianey is an engaging and entertaining educator specializing on the growing integration of network and AV technologies. Audio engineers increasingly need to become familiar and conversant with how to use IT resources in their work, and this session is designed to illuminate the concepts behind structurally designing a medium sized network for an installation, recording studio or live production.

Additional featured sessions taking place include: “Introducing A2B – A Low-Latency Digital Audio Bus Standard” with Joseph Beauchemin (Analog Devices) and Denis Labrecque (DeLab Consulting); “Network Audio Strategies: Charting Software, Hardware, Internet Requirements” presented by Sarah Weaver (NowNet Arts); and Saturday’s “Network Media Open Specifications (NMOS) — How They Relate to Audio Networking” with Andreas Hildebrand (ALC NetworX).

The AES has announced the program of events for this year’s exhibition hall Recording Stage events, taking place during AES New York 2019, offering a variety of presentations where top industry experts will offer practical advice and share knowledge and experience. The series of events, open to all attendees looking to improve their recording workflow and overall results, will take place October 16 – 18. 

Day one Recording Stage events take on a variety of topics with sessions including “Make the Most of Your Vocals” and “Recording 101,” complemented by other presentations including noted engineer and gear shoot-out guru Lynn Fuston’s “The Ultimate Microphone Line-Up Comparison,” presented by Sweetwater, and a featured session by JC Losada “Mr. Sonic” hosted by Waves. A panel on “What it Takes to Have a Successful Career in Audio,” presented by SoundGirls, will feature panelists Leslie Gaston-Bird, Karrie Keyes, Piper Payne, Michelle Sabolchick Pettinato, Jessica Thompson, April Tucker and Catherine Vericolli providing insights into what it takes to make it in the audio industry. 

On the second day of the exhibition, Recording Stage events kick off with presentations sponsored by SonicScoop, API and Genelec, tackling hot topics in production and monitoring. The afternoon continues with “The Technology behind GRAMMY-Winning Records – Michael Brauer and Igor Levin on the Art and Science of Pro Audio,” where the pair will take the stage to share the secrets of their mutual success, followed by the presentation “When Loud Is Not Loud: What You Need to Know About Loudness Measurement Today,” given by Alex Kosiorek. The day concludes with a closer look at vocals with the panel discussion “Beyond Basics in Vocal Recording & Production: Engineering with Focus on the Creative Process,” featuring Neal Cappellino, Mike Picotte and Jonathan Pines.

The final day of AES New York Recording Stage events will offer a slate of sessions set to entertain, educate and inspire. The day begins with the session “Studio DMI Presents Luca Pretolesi Super Session,” followed by Focusrite’s Dan Hughley hosting the session “Podcasting: The Fastest Growing Medium in Audio.” The Recording Stage events wrap up with the insightful sessions “On the Run with Sylvia Massy” and “Produce Like a Pro with Warren Huart,” where both Massy and Huart will expound upon their experiences and on production methods used on hit recordings.

On Wednesday, October 16, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., the session “So Unforgettable—Two Iconic Albums from Two Non-Studio Spaces” will see engineer/mixer Kevin Killen and interviewer Alex Case explore the making of U2’s The Unforgettable Fire and Peter Gabriel’s So – released just two years apart, and both featuring Kevin Killen’s mixing/engineering work. These records represented major points of creative inflection for each artist. Most of the production took place outside of any traditional studio, U2 recording in a castle and Gabriel in a converted cow shed. These special projects placed unique demands on the producers and engineers, yet became sonic touchstones for many artists and engineers since. 

Also on Wednesday, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, “The Making of Sheryl Crow's Threads” will feature Glenn Lorbecki interviewing mixer/engineer Dave O’Donnell, breaking down the making of the latest LP from the superstar singer-songwriter. This album features duets with different superstar artists on every track, and the album’s recording and mixing process employed a number of different approaches to capture the unique personalities of these diverse performers. 

Thursday will feature a lunchtime keynote from multiple GRAMMY award-winning producer Emmy-winning musical director and A-list drummer, Steve Jordan, taking place from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Jordan has recorded with the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Sheryl Crow, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Bruno Mars, The Pretenders, James Taylor, Diana Krall, Billy Joel, Don Henley, and Chick Corea, to name but a few, as well as being a member of the original Saturday Night Live Band and a founding member of the World's Most Dangerous Band for Late Night with David Letterman.

Also on Thursday, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, “The Doppler Gang – A Panel of Pros Discuss the Pros and Cons of Pitch Change” will feature co-moderators Anthony Agnello and Richard Factor (both of Eventide Inc.) with panelists Alex Case, Bob Clearmountain, George Massenburg, Susan Rogers and Tony Visconti – all noted recording professionals and educators – discussing the topic of pitch change processing. Analog tape invited tape speed manipulation and pitch change processing became the basis for many tracking and mixing effects. The effect became digitally available in the mid-70s. A broad set of pitch effects has evolved ever since, led in part by these panelists. Learn about their approaches and listen to the results, from obvious to subliminal, from logical to just plain wacky.

On Friday, “How We Make Music — Crossing the Decades from Analog to Digital” will take place from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm. Legendary mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge will serve as moderator, with panelists Niko Bolas, Danny Kortchmar, Tom Lord-Alge and Dave Way. Attendees will hear from these top recording engineers and producers, sharing techniques they use in bridging the worlds of analog and digital and how they connect the dots of the past, present, and future of creative technology. 

Other featured Recording and Production Track sessions include “Changing Roles in the Audio Industry,” exploring the ever-evolving roles of producers, engineers, mixers, and more, moderated by Paul "Willie Green" Womack with panelists Ariel Borujow, Ken "Duro" Ifill, and Mike Kuz; and “Mastering Immersive Audio” with moderator Michael Romanowski, Stefan Bock, Gavin Lurssen, Andres A. Mayo, Darcy Proper and Mark Wilder. The Audio Engineering Society has announced that GRAMMY® award-winning producer, Emmy-winning musical director, and A-list drummer Steve Jordan, will give Thursday’s Keynote Address, “The Love of Recording,” on October 17 at 1:30 pm during the AES New York 2019 Pro Audio Convention, which takes place at the Jacob Javits Center, October 16 – 19. Jordan’s career spans over four decades, playing with many of the top names in the music industry, from Stevie Wonder to the Saturday Night Live band, as well as producing albums for artists including Keith Richards, John Mayer, and Sheryl Crow. Jordan will also take part in Thursday’s Special Event session “Triple Threat: The Art, Production & Technology of Making Music” with legendary guitarist, songwriter and producer Danny Kortchmar.

Throughout his remarkable career, Jordan has recorded with the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, B.B. Upcoming Jay-Vee albums include Tony Joe White's The Best of Times, Mix Master Mike & Steve Jordan Beat Odyssey 2020, and The Verbs' new LP Garage Sale, featuring two strong singles at radio, “Simple Kinda Girl” and “Pleaser.” They are also the Directors of Special Events and Development at The Jazz Foundation of America and advisors to the Little Kids Rock Foundation in New York.  

In recent years, Steve has produced Keith Richards' album Crosseyed Heart, John Mayer’s The Search for Everything, Bettye LaVette’s acclaimed interpretation of Dylan’s work, Things Have Changed, Josh Groban’s hit “River” from his #1 album, Bridges, and Sheryl Crow’s final album Threads, and he’s currently finishing production work on upcoming albums by Robert Cray and Bettye LaVette.

Additional production credits include Rod Stewart’s Soulbook, John Mayer’s Battle Studies, The Verbs' Trip and Cover Story, Boz Scaggs’ Memphis and Fool to Care, Robert Cray’s In My Soul and his live project, 4 Nights of 40 Years Live. AES New York 2019 Hip-Hop and R&B Thursday events begin with an A-list panel discussion, “Chopped and Looped – Inside the Art of Sampling for Hip-Hop” featuring Just Blaze (Jay-Z, Kanye West), Breakbeat Lou (Afrika Bambaataa, Biz Markie), Hank Shocklee (Public Enemy, Mary J. Blige) and Ebonie Smith (Hamilton, Sturgill Simpson), moderated by AES New York Hip-Hop and R&B Track chair Paul "Willie Green" Womack (Wiz Khalifa, The Roots). Celebrating the art of the audio collage, the panelists will discuss the production technique that launched a genre, exploring the process of digging for samples, techniques and tools for composition, and concepts for processing and mixing a sample-driven production.

“We are very excited to bring together some amazing talents from the hip-hop and R&B world to the AES New York Convention,” states Womack. “The events that we have put together offer attendees a detailed look at some of the nuances that make these genres unique, along with a chance to learn directly from innovators of the art form as they share their role in putting this music on the map.” 

The program continues on Thursday with three dedicated events running through the afternoon. “The Soul of an R&B Mix” takes a look at genre-specific mixing techniques with Prince Charles Alexander (Notorious B.I.G, Sting), Neal Pogue (Outkast, Stevie Wonder) and host Womack. Next up, Dave Malekpour joins Womack to host the panel “Studio Design for Hip-Hop and R&B” featuring Larrance Dopson, James Fauntleroy, Frank Hendler and Rick St. Hilaire offering insights on the tools needed to outfit hip-hop and R&B studios of all sizes and budgets.

The afternoon concludes with an in-depth examination of highlights from the career of emcee/producer Q-Tip in the session “Engineering for The Abstract: Recording Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest,” presented by Gloria Kaba (Q-Tip, Madonna). Kalba will offer a detailed look at the making of A Tribe Called Quest’s 2016 release We Got it From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, from the writing process to capturing the wide range of performances and musicians on the album.
